Hollywood Ashes
The Hollywood Ashes is a yearly Cricket test held in Hollywood, California. The "Ashes" refers to the traditional Australia vs England National Cricket match that has been held between the two national Cricket teams since 1924.
History
The tradition of ex-patriot Cricket matches involving British and Australian actors in Hollywood goes back to the 1930s. During the Golden years of Hollywood, actors such as Errol Flynn and David Niven played cricket against each other, generally associated with the Hollywood Cricket Club.[1] The New Hollywood Ashes was conceived by some fans watching a game of cricket in 2007, when they floated the idea to make a yearly event involving ex-patriot actors from the two countries. [2] The first test started in 2007 and has continued every year since then.
Composition of teams
British and Australian actors play in the test, and otherwise attend or are involved. Where not enough actors are attending to make up the team, the remainder are made up of the Beverly Hills and Hollywood Cricket Club. The match is played in a 20/20 format, and normally takes place on a Sunday afternoon.[3]
Participating Celebrities
Over the history of the event, a number of high profile Australian and British actors have participated in and attended the event, including Travis Fimmel, Eric Idle, Tracey Ulman and Mel Gibson. The board that runs the event has a number of celebrities sitting on it, including Hugh Jackman, Rupert Murdoch, Ozzie Osborne, Michael Parkinson and English cricketer Simon Jones.[4]
