Holmes Family Rescue

Holmes Family Rescue is a 2021 Canadian home renovation series airing on CTV Life Channel in Canada and on HGTV in the United States. It stars general contractor Mike Holmes and two of his children, middle child Sherry and youngest child Michael, as they work together to help families in need by repair their home.

Originally announced in 2019^[1], it is the first series announced since Mike Holmes had moved away from having his shows hosted on HGTV Canada. Originally intended to air in 2020, its release was delayed by a year. Casting for the series was announced in August 2019^[2], though the casting call was ultimately for sister series Holmes Family Effect. Nonetheless, as with previous shows, nominations for the show continue to be accepted on the Holmes Group website; homes featured on the show must be located in the Greater Toronto Area, and homeowners are expected to contribute a small percentage of the funds towards reconstruction.

Similar to 2018's Holmes: Next Generation and 2019's Holmes 911, the Holmes family and their crew are shown to be helping families who have been victimized by bad contractors and poor workmanship, similar to the premise of 2003's Holmes on Homes. Like Holmes 911, each episode has the Holmes Crew work on multiple jobsites at once (though no episode depicts more than two jobs in progress), and the typical story of each set of homeowners is spread out over several episodes. New to Holmes shows in particular is a special emphasis on working with a rotating group of designers on the rebuild of each home.

Crew

Most of the Holmes Crew are new, though some were previously introduced in earlier Holmes shows.

Blake Steed is Sherry's husband, and the longest-serving member of the Holmes Crew, having joined the Holmes Crew on the second episode of Holmes Makes it Right in 2012. He acts as the crew chief for most jobs in the series.
Bailey Harris is an emerging renovator who is part of the crew for the first season.
Troy McKenna is another member of the Holmes Crew having appeared on previous Holmes shows.
Tyler Morrison is another member of the Holmes Crew having appeared on previous Holmes shows.
Sam Breen is a secondary crew chief introduced in the second season.

The Two-Storey House: The Holmes Crew arrives to help a couple who had hired four separate contractors, all failing to address a persistent leak in their basement; the subsequent effort had caused the couple to put off a kitchen renovation. As the investigation into the leak would require damage be done to the kitchen, the crew decide to give the homeowners the kitchen they had wanted as well. The Side-Split House: The Holmes Crew arrives to help a couple who had wanted to remodel their kitchen to prepare for the birth of their son, who would later be born with neuroblastoma, a condition that has lost him the use of his legs. Having lived with an incomplete kitchen for over five years and the scope of the renovation having changed, the crew must remodel the entire house to accommodate his needs. Right as the demolition is slated to begin, Sherry announces that she is pregnant with a second daughter.

The Two-Storey House (continued): The reconstruction of the ground floor concludes, and the finished space is presented to the homeowners. The Side-Split House (continued): The discovery of hidden structural and mould issues is disclosed to the homeowners, as the demolition concludes and design and reconstruction effort begins.

The Side-Split House (continued): The reconstruction of the main and second floors conclude, and the finished space is presented to the homeowners. The Bungalow: The Holmes Crew help an avid motorcycle racer who hired a trusted contractor to remodel their basement, but the contractor managed to intimidate her into extracting more funds from her for incomplete work. As a result of that experience, she has experienced a form of "renovation paralysis" which has prevented her from remodelling the rest of her home.
5	5	"Renovation Paralysis"	January 15, 2022 (2022-01-15)
The Bungalow (continued): Demolition work is done on the home, and the work in design and reconstruction begins. The Backsplit: The Holmes Crew travel to the home of an elderly woman who is a foster parent to over 70 children over the years, in addition to being a grandparent to adult grandchildren. She had hired a contractor for some exterior work, but it became apparent that the original contractor was completely unqualified and had abandoned the jobsite, which in turn endangered her ability to continue to be a foster parent. Additional renovations gone wrong has also further flooded her home, compromised the structural integrity of the home, and has presented ongoing safety hazards for the children of the home. During the demolition, Mike celebrates his 58th birthday with the Holmes Crew at the jobsite; Sherry also brings her daughter Cali to the jobsite for the occasion.

The Bungalow (continued): The reconstruction work concludes, and the finished spaces are presented to the homeowner. The Backsplit (continued): The demolition work concludes, and multiple additional safety issues were discovered. Work on the redesign and reconstruction begins.
7	7	"Watered Down Dreams"	January 29, 2022 (2022-01-29)
The Backsplit (continued): The reconstruction work concludes, and the finished main floor is presented to the homeowner. The Rancher-Style Home: The Holmes Crew arrive at a home that has experienced persistent leaks in their foundation. The foundation repair company hired to fix the issues were unable to fix the issues after repeated visits, and decided to refund the money paid by the homeowners as part of their warranty commitment. Due to the advanced stages of her pregnancy, Sherry is evicted from the jobsite.
8	8	"It's a Water-filled Life"	February 5, 2022 (2022-02-05)
The Rancher-Style Home (continued): After the waterproofing was repaired, the Holmes Crew shift their focus into re-grading the property and rebuilding the homeowners' backyard. The Bungalow: The Holmes Crew arrive at a home that needed a basement remodel due to having a sewage backup, but the contractor ended up doing even more damage to the basement before abandoning the jobsite, leaving the homeowner with additional usability issues in her basement.
9	9	"Take Me Holmes, Country Roads"	February 12, 2022 (2022-02-12)
The Rancher-Style Home (continued): The reconstruction of the backyard concludes, and the finished space is presented to the homeowners. Just before the work is completed, Sherry, mostly absent from the jobsite due to being in the late stages of her pregnancy, gives birth to her second daughter, Oaklyn. The Bungalow (continued): Demolition of the basement reveals issues that causes the entire basement be torn down and redone, and that repair work extends into the foundation due to the presence of various holes and cracks and portions of the main floor due to the house needing to be rewired.
10	10	"Color Crisis"	February 19, 2022 (2022-02-19)
The Bungalow (continued): With demolition work complete, design and reconstruction work begin on the home, during which Michael meets the baby Oaklyn for the first time. Mike also details about how a stray cat named Meow-Meow has taken up residence in his home. Frank's House: The Holmes Crew come to the aid of Frank Cozzolino, an electrician who has been a constant presence on Holmes shows ever since the very beginning of Holmes on Homes as a subcontractor, and thus a friend of the Holmes family for over 20 years. Due to his failing health, he is reluctantly calling for help remodelling his home.
11	11	"Tickled Pink"	February 26, 2022 (2022-02-26)
The Bungalow (continued): The work to finish the basement is completed and presented to the homeowner. Mike meets the baby Oaklyn for the first time when Sherry brings her to the jobsite. Frank's House (continued): The intervention by the Holmes Crew turns out to be timely, as they discover electrical work left by a previous homeowner that does not meet Frank's high standards, in addition to some non-electrical work that, while well-meaning, Frank had failed to install properly. The design and reconstruction work also begins.

Frank's House (continued): The work to finish the home is concluded, and, due to the changes in the seasons, is presented to Frank and his family in two parts: an exterior water feature in the fall, and the rest of the ground floor in the winter.

In this special episode (not to be confused with the Holmes on Homes special episode of the same name), Sherry challenges Mike and Michael to a contest to decorate each of their homes, with Mike's uncle, "Uncle Billy" Bill Bell, judging and determining which home is the best decorated. Each member of the Holmes family is given the assistance of their significant others; Mike with longtime partner Anna Zappia, Sherry with husband and crew chief Blake Steed, and Michael with his wife Lisa Marie Holmes. As Sherry is pregnant with their second child (and would give birth to daughter Oaklyn by judging time), the Holmes family agree that Michael's and Sherry's eldest sister, Amanda Holmes (in her first appearance since Holmes on Homes), can also be on Sherry's team. Michael's brother-in-law, Rob Collier (in his first appearance since Holmes and Holmes), also assists on his team.

The Pool House: The Holmes Crew arrive at the suburban home of a tile installer and his family. As an accomplished tradesperson who strongly believes in the honesty and guarantees implied in a handshake agreement, he found that his trust violated when the contractor hired to install a backyard pool simply absconded with the money without doing any work.

Additionally, a second contractor working on creating the separate exit for the basement was also criticized for similar poor workmanship, in addition to damaging the neighbour's property in the process.

The Basement Apartment House (continued): Demolition work is completed on the basement, and work on framing the basement apartment begins. The design of the basement apartment space is finalized. Plans are also drawn for completing the exterior entrance to the basement apartment. The City Bungalow: The Holmes Crew, at the request of crew chief Sam Breen, visit the home of the father of one of Sam's friends. He is a retired tile installer who was a mentor to Sam, but had recently suffered from a stroke, making it difficult to move around, let alone continue work on remodelling his own home. The crew prepare to finish the renovation so that he can enjoy his retirement in peace.

The Basement Apartment House (continued): The reconstruction of the basement apartment is completed, ready for the homeowners' relatives to move in. During the reconstruction, Michael's wife, Lisa Marie Holmes, shows up at the jobsite for a romantic lunch date. The City Bungalow (continued): The discovery of mould in a closet of the main bedroom has led Mike to order the demolition of a backyard deck, extending the work they are doing to the homeowners' backyard. Additionally, demolition has revealed that the roof, due to the age of the house, needs to be reinforced to prevent it from caving in. Work on the redesign of the home begins.

The Hobby Farm: The Holmes Crew travel to a rural property not far from Mike's residence, where the effort to renovate a home built in 1870 with a laundry room addition has gone wrong, with an initial contractor walking off the jobsite due to the complexity, and a second contractor exacerbating the home's problems with unsafe and dangerous work due to insisting it be done without permits. During the first day of construction, Mike meets his fifth grandchild, Michael's newborn daughter Azura, for the first time, when Michael's wife Lisa Marie Holmes also shows up at the jobsite.
