Holoxica Limited

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Holoxica Limited is a hard tech company working on disruptive holographic 3D technologies, from static digital holograms to dynamic holographic video displays. Holographic technology is based on the physical principles of light diffraction and does not require glasses or wearables, where images can appear in mid-air and are viewable naturally. The company started by making static 3D digital holographic images for medical imaging, scientific data visualization, engineering design and architecture.[1] Holoxica has also pioneered a series of dynamically changeable holographic displays over the past few years.[2][3] The company is located at Codebase,[4] Edinburgh, Scotland.

Technologies[edit]

Holoxica has successfully demonstrated several generations of holographic video displays. The technical approach advocates a simplified approach by starting with basic building blocks and scaling towards higher resolution and performance. The first-generation holographic display demonstrator, built in 2010, had up to nine voxels and could show simple numeric information, icons, symbology, etc. This technology can be used to build segmented 3D displays, similar to the early segmented LCDs found in calculators and clocks. The second-generation display was announced in 2013. This is a planar Head-Up Display (HUD) with hundreds of thousands voxels and freeform images floating in mid-air that can change in real time. Interactivity is added with a Kinect motion sensor that allows you to 'touch' icons in free space and 'draw' in mid-air. The third generation display builds upon the previous generations to create a volumetric display, this project is supported by the European Union Horizon 2020 SME programme. The images are bright and visible under indoor lighting conditions, and the approach is scalable, leveraging existing manufacturing techniques and components.

Digital holograms are based on holoprinting technology from partners, to create autostereoscopic (no glasses or goggles required) and full-parallax (viewing of the image from viewpoints above and below as well as from side to side) 3D images.

Company history[edit]

Holoxica Limited is a privately held company formed in 2008 by Javid Khan to commercialise the results of his doctoral research in Holographic 3D Displays.[5] The company started up with offices a year later, based at the Scottish Microelectronics Centre, an incubator at the University of Edinburgh. Holoxica relocated to CodeBase in 2016, with the aim of getting investment and expansion.

Holoxica has historically focused its efforts in the medical and science markets. It has created pioneering medical holograms[6] and the world's first scientifically accurate hologram of a protein for use in biomedical research.[7] Holoxica is attempting to leverage the knowledge gained through its medical and scientific pursuits to expand its market focus and incorporate products which would be suitable for non-professional consumers.

Awards[edit]

Holoxica projects have received the following awards:

  • November 2011: Nexxus Scotland Award for Scientific Medical Imaging[8]
  • January 2012: SPIE (International Photonics Society) Award for Holographic Displays[9]
  • June 2012 - September 2013: "Rhind Mummy" hologram selected for exhibition at the MIT Museum of Holography[10]
