Homemakers Furniture is a home furnishings store that sells furniture, mattresses, and home décor. It is headquartered in Urbandale, Iowa, a suburb of Des Moines. It was founded in 1974 by Carl and Ina Merschman, and later purchased by Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM) in 2000.[1]. The store consists of a 215,000 square foot retail space, as well as two individual warehouses connected via a skywalk conveyor system[2]. Homemakers Furniture employs 355 people, making them the eighth largest employer in the city of Urbandale[3].

In 1974, Carl and Ina Merschman founded Homemakers Furniture when they purchased a 31,000 square foot building in Des Moines. They would later add a second location in Urbandale in 1985[4].
In 2000, Nebraska Furniture Mart, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, purchased Homemakers Furniture. However, this acquisition did not affect the management or operations of the store, and Homemakers Furniture continues to be run by the Merschman family[1]. While Nebraska Furniture Mart opened a new location in Clive, Iowa, another Des Moines suburb, in 2001, the store does not sell home furnishings, focusing on home appliances instead, as both companies are owned by Berkshire Hathaway[5].
The Urbandale location began a series of expansions and renovations in 2007 that added over 100,000 square feet of additional retail space to the store[6]. The Des Moines location was then merged into the expanded Urbandale location in May 2009, which remains the sole location today[7].
In 2014, Homemakers Furniture launched their e-commerce website, Homemakers.com, to enable customers to browse and purchase products online, as well as expand business to customers throughout the United States[8]
The Urbandale location was again expanded in 2015 to add a secondary 110,000 square foot warehouse. This was connected to the original warehouse via a skywalk conveyor belt system.[2]
