Honest History is an American publishing company for children based in Los Angeles, California. Honest History magazine launched in September 2018 with the slogan, "The Adventure Magazine for Young Historians." The company's mission is to "share truthful, well-researched stories from the past that inspire kids to create a positive impact on history."[1]
In addition to its quarterly magazine, Honest History publishes books, podcasts, and classroom magazines for kids.[2]
Company history and expansion[edit]
The company was founded in 2018 by Brooke Knight and David Knight as an independent quarterly magazine for children.[3] The first issue of Honest History magazine was published in September 2018. In November 2020, Honest History launched a mobile app as a companion to their magazine series, featuring stories, illustrations, and DIY activities for children. In 2021, Honest History released a classroom subscription series for U.S. schools. in partnership with Gibbs Smith Education.[4] The company further expanded its product line in late 2021 with a middle-grade book series titled History Is _____.[5] Also in late 2021, Honest History released a podcast for children called Anytime Now that features stories from the past told by a different host for each episode.
Magazine[edit]
Honest History magazine is published quarterly and the topic of each issue is based on important people, places, and events from history around the world. The magazine is created for kids ages 6–12 years old[6] and contains 64 pages of illustrations, stories, activities and DIYs.[7][8] The magazine is offered in both print and digital formats.
The magazine has been named one of "the coolest magazines for kids" by Mother[9] and in 2020 won a National Parenting Product Award.[10]
Honest History Readers[edit]
Honest History introduced a classroom subscription series based on United States history called Honest History Readers. The series is created in a set of 9 volumes per year for grades K–2 and 3–5 and aligns with the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards as well as the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy. Honest History Readers are also correlated to the Social Justice Standards as part of the Framework for Anti-Bias Education. [11]
Podcast[edit]
Honest History introduced a new podcast series titled Anytime Now in September 2021. New episodes are release bi-weekly and discuss a person or moment from history in a narrative format. Episodes include stories of Ellen and William Craft, Dolores del Río, Madhumala Chattopadhyay, Virginia Hall, Osamu Tezuka, Taras Shevchenko, Rachel Carson, Standing Bear, Ira Aldridge, and Ada Lovelace. Each episode is hosted by a different narrator, including Patton Oswalt and Craig Benzine.
