Hong Leong Financial Group Berhad (MYX: 1082), formally Hong Leong Credit Berhad, is a banking and financial services holding company in Malaysia with regional presence in other Southeast Asian countries, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. The company is part of the Hong Leong Group conglomerate[6] and consists of the following key subsidiaries: Hong Leong Bank, Hong Leong Capital and Hong Leong Assurance.[7] The holding company was set up on 6 September 1968. Hong Leong Financial Group has its headquarters in Damansara City, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.[8]
History
Acquisition of MUI Bank
On 3 January 1983, Hong Leong Credit Berhad acquired MUI Bank and renamed it Hong Leong Bank. Since then, it had gone through multiple mergers with and acquisitions of other local banks such as the acquisition of Wah Tat Bank in 2001 and EON Bank in May 2011, establishing Hong Leong as the fourth-largest bank in Malaysia.[9][10][11]
Entry into Mainland China
In October 2007, Hong Leong Financial Group acquired a 20 percent stake in China's Chengdu City Commercial Bank in a RM877.5 mil. deal, marking the group's entry into the Chinese market where the group describes as “promising and growing financial services sector”.[12] In November 2009, the group also established the consumer finance company Sichuan Jincheng Consumer Finance Ltd Liability Co (SJCF) in a 49:51 joint venture between Hong Leong Bank and Bank of Chengdu, marking Hong Leong's expansion into China and the region.[13]
