The Honorary Consulate of Romania in Žilina (Slovak: Honorárny konzulát Rumunska v Žiline, Romanian: Consulatul onorific al României la Žilina) is an honorary diplomatic mission of Romania in Slovakia. The consulate is located in the north-west of Slovakia, in the regional city of Žilina, and is responsible for the Žilina and Trenčín self-governing regions. Currently (2024), it is the only honorary consulate of Romania in the Slovak Republic.[1][2][3]

History[edit]

The honorary consulate was created by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania at the suggestion of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to the Slovak Republic, H. E. Călin Fabian. The Consular Patent was issued in Romania on June 14, 2023, and the receiving country's consent, Exequatur, was signed by the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic on June 22, 2023. Heraldist, architect and founder of the non-governmental organization Servare et Manere, Marek Sobola, became the first Romanian honorary consul in Žilina.[4]

Opening of the consulate[edit]

The consulate was ceremoniously opened in the Žilina Groma Art Factory gallery on the occasion of the 165th anniversary of the Day of the Unification of the Romanian Principalities. This day is a national holiday of Romania, which commemorates an important milestone in the history of Romania and Moldova.

In addition to the Romanian ambassador and honorary consul, the opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Erika Jurinová, the governor of the Žilina Region, the mayor of Žilina Peter Fiabáne, representatives of the Diocese of Žilina as well as the Military Ordinariate of Slovakia, representatives of the Hungarian Embassy, the Embassy of Serbia, and the Embassy of Poland, as well as the honorary consuls of the Kingdom of Denmark, Iceland, Chile, Kyrgyzstan, and other guests from both self-governing regions under the jurisdiction of the consulate, participated at the event.[5]
