Hopoo Games, LLC is an American Independent video game developer based in Seattle. It was founded in 2012 by Duncan Drummond and Paul Morse, and is known for the critically acclaimed games Risk of Rain, Deadbolt and Risk of Rain 2.

History[edit]

Hopoo Games was formed by childhood friends Duncan Drummond and Paul Morse in 2012 while studying at college.

In 2013 they released their first title Risk of Rain, a 2d roguelike action platformer inspired primarily by Maplestory.[1]. Risk of Rain was named one of the Student Showcase winners of the 2014 Independent Games Festival, and subsequently won the Student Prize Award[2]. The game had sold more than three million copies by 2019[3].

In 2016 they released their second title Deadbolt, a 2d stealth action shoot-em-up. Deadbolt is a narrative and objective based game where you play as a film noir inspired version of the Grim Reaper sent to retrieve the souls of the dead by a mysterious fireplace.

In 2020 they released their third title and first sequel Risk of Rain 2. Risk of Rain 2 is a roguelike third-person shooter developed by Hopoo Games and published by Gearbox Publishing. A sequel to 2013's Risk of Rain, it was released in early access for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019 before fully releasing in August 2020 with a release for Stadia coming a month later. By March 2021, the game had sold over four million units on the personal computer side alone, not accounting for console sales[4].

Risk of Rain 2 was nominated for awards following its release. At the 2021 SXSW Gaming Awards, the game was nominated for Indie Game of the Year and for Excellence in Multiplayer[5].  At the Indie Live Expo II, the game was nominated for Best "Game Feel" Award[6].

A paid expansion for Risk of Rain 2 called "Survivors of the Void" was released on March 1, 2022 for Windows, and the console versions of the expansion are expected in Q4 2022[7]
