Hopster is a British media-services provider and production company aimed at pre-school age children. It was launched on 23 November 2013 by Nicholas Walters, who previously held multiple senior roles at Nickelodeon.[1][2]

Launch[edit]

Hopster first launched as a video on demand streaming service on the App Store on 23 November 2013. Initially, it was available on iPhones and iPad in the UK, offering a selection of licensed animated content, music videos and digital educational games for children 6 and under.[3]

International expansion[edit]

In March 2015 Hopster launched its mobile application globally in over 100 countries[4], in April it rolled out the application on Android devices and in May 2015 Hopster launched a streaming service on Apple TV.[5] In June 2015 Hopster was launched in Australia and New Zealand[6] and in August 2016 it launched in the United States in the App Store and on Google Play.[7]

Partnerships[edit]

In October 2015 Hopster partnered with EE on the world’s first 4G kids’ tablet, the Robin,[8] and in December it signed an agreement with Icelandic telecommunications provider, Vodafone Iceland, to launch a preschool streaming service on Vodafone Play in Icelandic.[9] In April 2016 Hopster launched a children’s streaming service on Maxis, a communications service provider in Malaysia[10], in January 2017 it launched on Roku streaming devices in the US, UK, Ireland, France and Canada[11] and in May 2017 on Amazon Channels in the UK.[12]

In July 2018 TalkTalk added Hopster to its TV line-up[13] and in August STV, the British free-to-air television channel serving Scotland, has added Hopster to its online streaming platform.[14] In September Hopster launched on Comcast, the American broadcasting company, via its Xfinity X1 set-top, marking the first time the service became available on a pay TV provider in the US.[15] In December 2018 Hopster launched on DISH[16] and Sling Television[17] and in February 2019 it launched across western Balkans with The United Group.[18]

Hopster is a preschool play and learning digital platform, which allows users to stream a curated collection of kid’s learning TV shows. The Hopster smartphone and tablet app also allows users additional access to educational games, books, and songs.[19]

Hopster creates original content under the Hopster Studios[20] banner. These shows run on Hopster services globally. Some have also been licensed for linear broadcast, such as 'Two Minute Tales' on WDR Fernsehen in Germany.[21]

Hopster licenses learning shows from major content providers. These deals vary in nature between distributors, as well as depending on the specific content.[28]

E-books and video books[edit]

In 2017, Hopster partnered with publisher HarperCollins Children’s Books to carry a range of their famous titles in Hopster, including The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Mog, and Lost and Found.[29]

These were a mixture of e-books, audio books, and ‘storytime’ video books on the Hopster ‘Book Boat’.[30]
