The House of the Cenete is a Spanish noble house, originally from the Crown of Castile, whose name comes from the Marquisate of Cenete. The estate of the house also included the baronies of Ayora, Alazque, Alberique and Gavarda in the Kingdom of Valencia and the dominions of Jadraque, the Castle of Jadraque and Alcocer, in Guadalajara.
History[edit]
The first marquis, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar y Mendoza, builder of the Castle of La Calahorra,[1] married Leonor de la Cerda y Aragón and later with María Fonseca. His daughter Mencía, II Marchioness, died without issue, while his daughter María, III Marchioness, married Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, IV Count of Saldaña, heir to the Duke of the Infantado, joining the Casa del Cenete to the Casa del Infantado, whose members used it alternately, calling themselves the first Duke of the Infantado and Marquis del Cenete and his successor Marquis de Cenete and Duke of Infantado.[2]
