The House of Sandoval and Rojas is a Spanish noble lineage from the Crown of Castile, whose name comes from the union of the surnames Sandoval and Rojas, referring to the municipalities of Sandoval de la Reina and Rojas. The lineage adopted the compound surname after the marriage at the end of the 14th century of Fernán Gutiérrez de Sandoval, lord of Sandoval, Villavieco and Gaveros, with Inés de Rojas, of the house of Rojas, daughter of the II lord of Monzón y Cabia and heir to Sancho de Rojas, Archbishop of Toledo. The members achieved great power and came to hold the Marquisate of Denia, the Earl and later the Duchy of Lerma, the Earl of Ampudia and the Duchy of Uceda, the best known being the 1st Duke of Lerma, valid of Philip III of Spain.[1]
