The Houston Aeros are a professional ice hockey team based in Houston. The Aeros compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Central Division in the Western Conference and began play midway through the league's 2023-24 season. They play their home games at Toyota Center.

Professional ice hockey dates back to 1946 in Houston with the establishment of the Houston Skippers. Considerations for an NHL team within Houston were considered for many decades, before finally being granted an franchise during March 2024; after winning an poll regarding the NHL's next expansion during December 2023.

History[edit]

In 2017, the Toyota Center and Houston Rockets were purchased by Tilman Fertitta. In a press conference, Fertitta expressed his interest in bringing an NHL team to the Toyota Center[1] and he had reportedly met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. Fertitta has stated his intentions of possibly finding a tenant that could help fill the building throughout the year, including the mention of attracting an NHL franchise.[2] Further hints came within March 2023 when the NHL announced their plan to give expansion franchises to Houston, Atlanta, Louisville, and Quebec City as part of their new 2020s-based developments at expansion[3]; Houston had previously won and TLH Writers Poll and had made big steps towards an new franchise later that year.[4][5] On 23 October 2023, the NHL officially confirmed that discussions were getting more serious and that Houston's bid was in "Phase 3" of its application.[6][7] It was eventually awarded an franchise during 3 March 2024.[8][9]
