Hoya-Boya

Hoya-Boya is the Yurukyara of Kesennuma City in Miyagi Prefecture. Yurukyara stands for yurui masucotto kyarakutā, a gentle mascot. It works for public relations and promotion of its area. Generally speaking, a local public body and a country admit it to be a local character.[1] Hoya-Boya works hard to advertise the foods and sightseeing of Kesennuma. His head is made of ascidians, and has the sword made of a Pacific saury and the belt made of a scallop, which are the special products of Kesennuma.[2] Hoya-Boya’s headgear has the oral siphon and the atrial siphon.[3] His favorite foods are shark’s fin, bonitos and Pacific saurys. He is good at riding a shark.[4]

History

Hoya-Boya was born when the Sendai and Miyagi Destination Campaign was held in 2008. He was created by one of the ideas from the public for a mascot character of sightseeing in Kesennuma city.[5] He got 65,134 points and won 26th place of all 865 characters and 1st place of Tohoku characters in the Yuru-Chara Grand Prix 2012.[6] In the Yuru-Chara Grand Prix 2013, he gained 81,541 points; however, he took 36th place of all 1,579 characters and 2nd place of Tohoku characters.[7] He appeared in the theatrical version of “Ataru (TV series)” , which was released in September 14, 2013.[8]

About Kesennuma

Kesennuma city belongs to Miyagi prefecture in Tohoku region, Japan. It is located in the northeastern part of Miyagi prefecture.[9] The population of the city is 17,062 people investigated at the end of July 2014[10] . The total area of the city is 333.41 square kilometers and is the 6th biggest city in Miyagi prefecture[11] . There are many special products in this city, such as an ascidian, a Pacific saury, a scallop, etc. Most of the special products are from the ocean because the city faces the Pacific Ocean.[12] The coast is called Sanriku coast. This is why Hoya-Boya is created by an ascidian, a Pacific saury, and a scallop.

Activities

Event he joined

On October 19 and 20 in 2013, Hoya-Boya was invited to “the Local Characters Expo in Hikone” by Keishiro Masamura. He also invited Hoya-Boya in 2012. He is a leader of the volunteer organization, hikone moriage tai, which continues the support to the disaster areas damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake from May 2011, right after the earthquake. Hoya-Boya joined the event informally and held the exhibition of products from the Great East Japan Earthquake recovery support disaster areas in Hikone.[13] The expo is held in Hikone in Shiga Prefecture, in which a yurukyara was born and is the holy place of yurukyaras. In the expo, yurukyaras from Hokkaido to Okinawa advertised their hometown.[14] According to the announcement of the organizer, 73,000 people came to this event in total during two days although it rained on the 20th.[15] Mr. Masamura helped Hoya-Boya’s activities in the event. Mr. Masamura also held the exhibition of products from Kesennuma, and Hoya-Boya interacted with tourists there. According to Mainichi Shimbun, Mr. Masamura hopes that everyone knows the present and the efforts of the disaster areas through Hoya-Boya. Hoya-Boya will encourage people of the disaster areas.[16]

Song

In September 2013, a keyboard player Mr. HAYATO finished making a song of Hoya-Boya, and it has become popular in the city. He was living in Niza city in Saitama Prefecture, and visited Kesennuma in February 2013 for the first time. He had visited there almost every month after that and played music at some facilities such as temporary dwellings and kindergartens. He thinks that recovery from the Tsunami damage of Kesennuma would be accelerated if more and more people around Kesennuma or in the whole Japan get to know about Kesennuma better with Hoya-Boya or with his song and visit Kesennuma. In order to spread his rhythmical song, he has given the local people more than 1,000 CDs of the song. He said that he hoped to distribute CDs to all the children in the city at that time. He had been paying the cost of making CDs by himself and he was collecting contributions.[17] The song had become more popular and it was played more than 2,800 times on YouTube. He made a courtesy call on Shigeru Sugawara, the Mayor of Kesennuma and asked him to make use of the song with local people so that many people would come to Kesennuma for sightseeing.[18]

Exercise

In August 2013, students in Waseda University Hirayama Ikuo Kinen Volunteer Center (WAVOC) made an exercise of the Hoya-Boya as the revival of Kesennuma city. At first, an exercise was made just to cheer the people who live in the temporary dwelling, but the students utilized Hoya-Boya because the exercise was very popular among the people. Members of the WAVOC, Keisuke Makino made the music and Natsumi Tada wrote the lyrics. After the Hoya-Boya exercise was published, many offers came, and in September 2013, a Hoya-Boya exercise event took place in Mizunasi nursery school[19] . Now, the exercise is introduced to the nursery schools in Kesennuma city.[20] From then, WAVOC has moved forward with a project to make the DVD of the exercise. The project has succeeded, and it can now be rented from libraries in Kesennuma city.[21] WAVOC has not only carried out the DVD project, but also did much more things. One of the project is, “the evergreen forest in the sea project”. These projects are still moving forward, and by advancing these projects, it will contribute to the revival of Tohoku region. Hoya-Boya was used to make the community welfare of Tohoku region better.[22]
