Hridi Huq is noted as the Organizing Secretary of Nagorik Nattyangon and Executive Member of Bangladesh Group Theater Federation. In 2018, her influential personality made Hridi Huq the Joint General Secretary of Director's Guild for consecutive second term.
Early life and background
Born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Hridi Huq is the daughter of renowned theatre activist parents Lucky Enam and Enamul Haque. She has a sister, Proitee Huq, also a theater activist.
Huq was brought up in a diversified environment where there was always room for creativity. Her father Dr. Enamul Huq, the Independence Day Award and the Ekushe Padak recipient, is a prominent educator-writer-actor and mother Lucky Enam is also the Ekushe Padak recipient and an actor-writer and director. With few others, this duo pioneered the theatre movement in Bangladesh after liberation. Hridi Huq grew up looking up to them and developed a keen interest in theatrical activities, acting, writing and other branches of fine arts from early days of her life. Chayanaut is the institution, where she started to go to learn dancing and
singing from the age of five.
Huq studied at Viqarunnisa Noon School & College and an alumna of University of Dhaka. After successfully receiving master's degree in Business Administration, Hridi Huq started her career life at Banglavision TV in Marketing. Later she switched to Bitopi Advertising Agency. Following a brief stint, Hridi Huq established her own company Ticket, a film and television program production company and started to pursue her directorial career. Along the way, she has been a dedicated theater activist and crafted a colorful theater.
Career
Theater
Huq started to play around props, set and cyclometer long before she seriously decided to take theater as her career. She went to rehearsals with her parents and usually sat quiet to see. A strong passion for theatrical activities grew within her; which reflected on Hridi Huq's first appearance in Amader Jonmo Holo by Syed Shamsul Haq and Directed by Aly Zaker at Nagorik Nattya Shamradaya. As Juliet in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet – a three months long workshop base production of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy – in 1995 – her charismatic performance caught the eyes of the audiences of Bangladesh. Ever since, Hridi Huq took part in several seminars, workshops and productions at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, British Council and Bangladesh Group Theater Federation and kept on making quality productions with Nagorik Nattyangon. Hridi Huq received critical acclaim for her performance as Panchi in Pragoitihashik, a theatrical adaptation of Manik Bandopadhyay’s short story of the same name by Nagorik Nattyangon. Hridi Huq revealed her excellence not only in acting, but also with music, singing, dancing, choreography, costume designing, playwriting and directing. In 2014, Nagorik Nattyangon decided to work with Hridi Huq’s idea of adding a folk-theatre Gohor Badsha O Banesa Porii – a ballad from the southern part of Bangladesh – into their resume and gave her the responsibility of dramatization of the folklore and direction of the production. After months of hard work, anticipation and speculation, on 17 November 2015, at Jatiyo Nattyoshala of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Gohor Badsha O Banesa Porii debuted before a house full of audience and became an instant success. Hridi Huq also acted in it as protagonist Banesa Porii – The Fairy Princess. The following year, in 2016, Hridi Huq’s second dramatization Kritodasher Hashi, based on popular novel by Shawkat Osman of the same name, where she portrayed Meherjaan.
Television
Huq made her Television debut as a child in Kichuto Bolun (1985) – a television fiction aired on BTV – produced by Kha Ma Harun. Her television career began in earnest years later with her first leading role in a very popular television fiction series Road No. 6 Bari No. 9 directed by Lucky Enam. Henceforth, she starred in copious television productions. As she has a huge fascination for Rabindranath Tagore’s work, she found an immense pleasure in making of a number of adaptation work of Tagore’s literature for television as an actor, e.g. Chirokumar Shobha, Mohamaya, Apod, Shesh Adhyay etc. Sultanar Shwopno – an adaptation of Begum Rokeya’s Sultana’s Dream – is one of her noteworthy work.
In 2005, she expanded her television career as a Playwright with Amader Anondo Bari a long serial which aired on NTV. From then, she has been writing without interruption. Hridi Huq turned into Director in 2007 with 1920, a fiction series written by her and aired on NTV.
