Human Capital is a 2004 American novel by Stephen Amidon.

Set in an affluent American suburb, Human Capital examines turn-of-the-millenium capitalism and the American Dream through the interwoven lives of two families.

Human Capital was first published by Farrar Straus Giroux and received critical acclaim.[1] The novel made best of the year lists in New York Times, Sunday Times, Washington Post, and Christian Science Monitor.[2] Human Capital was translated into a number of languages, including Italian.[3]

In 2013, Italian director Paolo Virzi shot a film based on Human Capital. Adapted by Virzi, Francesco Piccolo, and Francesco Bruni, and starring Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Fabrizio Gifuni, Valeria Golino, and Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Il capitale umano was a box office [4] and critical success, winning many awards, including best film at the 2014 David di Donatello, Nastro d'Argento, and Globi D'Oro awards.[5] Virzi's film premiered in America at the Tribeca Film Festival, where Bruni Tedeschi won best actress[6]. Il capitale umano was the Italian entry for best film at the 2015 Academy Awards[7].

In 2019, an American version of Human Capital was filmed. Adapted from Amidon's novel and Virzi's film by Oren Moverman, the remake was directed by Mark Meyers and starred Liev Schrieber, Marisa Tomei, Peter Sarsgaard, Alex Wolff, and Maya Hawke.[8] It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.[9]
