Huron Waves Music Festival
The Huron Waves Music Festival[1] will showcase the best of Canadian and visiting international artists at an annual springtime music festival in Huron region that includes Grand Bend, Exeter and other communities. While its 2020 Festival was originally scheduled for the first two weekends of May, emergency measures initiated to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the creation of an online holiday program in December 2020.
History[edit]
Formally known as The Bach Festival, four biennial programs were presented in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017. Following the highly successful 2017 festival, the founder and artistic director was lost to illness. The Board of Directors continued to believe that music and the arts deserved dynamic, professional, high profile programming in the Huron region. John Miller[2], the founder and recently retired director of Stratford Summer Music, was welcomed as the Artistic Advisor to the Board.
A new name was chosen, Huron Waves Music Festival, alluding to the waves of beautiful Lake Huron, waves conjured by wind in the grain in the farm fields of Huron County, and the sound waves of music. The festival set its sights on providing music in a variety of locations in the area rather than being focused on the town of Exeter. The festival decided to broaden its scope to welcome the very best of Canadian and visiting international artists.
The Work to Date[edit]
Restrictions from COVID-19 forced a hold on the live event it had intended, however, the festival saw profound success in the inauguration of a virtual event named Huron Waves Celebrates the Season Holiday Program[3]. Funded by Celebrate Ontario and Bruce Power, the program dazzled nearly 13,000 viewers with performances by First Nations Sunset Drummers and Dancers, Antonella Martinelli of the National Ballet of Canada, and The Newfoundland Deaf Choir, to name a few.
