Part of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season and 2022–23 European windstorm season |
Hurricane Danielle was a high-end Category 1 hurricane that persisted over the central subtropical Atlantic ocean. The fourth named storm, and first hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season and the first windstorm of the 2022–23 European windstorm season, Danielle originated from a low-pressure area in the central subtropical Atlantic.
Despite never directly hitting land as a tropical cyclone, Danielle made an extratropical landfall near Azóia, Portugal. The Azores, Portugal, and Spain saw heavy rain as Danielle passed by. Overall, damage from Danielle is currently unknown.
Danielle was also the first storm to form in the Atlantic since July 4 after Colin dissipated, it formed right on the first day of September, making it the first hurricane season to not have a August storm since 1997.

On August 30, the NHC noted that a low pressure area had formed along a decaying frontal zone in the central subtropical Atlantic.[1] Convection within the storm began to organize itself, allowing the disturbance to strengthen. By September 1, the disturbance had intensified into Tropical Depression Five. Later that evening, the NHC noticed that the system had further organized itself and had intensified into Tropical Storm Danielle, 900 miles west of the Azores.[2][3] On September 2, Danielle strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane after organizing itself furthermore.[4] The next day, the system slowed down as it was caught south of a blocking high, causing it to weaken back into a tropical storm due to dry air moving into the system's center, as well as cooler waters.[5][6] Later that day, Danielle began to move westward. As it changed direction, it was able to re-strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane overnight September 3–4.[7] Danielle reached its peak intensity of 90 mph (150 km/h) on September 5. After reaching its peak intensity, Danielle once again changed direction and began to move west-northwestward.[8] The system then moved over a rather cold area of the Gulf Stream, resulting in it weakening down to a low-end Category 1 hurricane.[9] Still moving northwestward, Danielle re-intensified after moving back into warm waters on September 7, but re-entered the cold area of the Gulf Stream a few hours later, resulting in it weakening once again.[10] Danielle continued to weaken, eventually weakening into a tropical storm. A few hours after weakening into a tropical storm, Danielle transitioned into a post-tropical cyclone as it began moving north.[11] Danielle stopped weakening and stayed at the same intensity as it made a loop. Danielle slowly began to weaken once again, as it changed direction[12], beginning to move southeast.[13] On September 12, Danielle hit Azóia, a suburban town near Lisbon, as an extratropical-cyclone. Danielle moved briefly inland into Portugal before dissipating on September 13.[14]
Preparations and impact[edit]
Large waves and heavy rain hit the Azores.[15] Danielle made an extratropical cyclone landfall in Portugal, bringing heavy rain to the country. Between September 12–13, 644 accidents were reported throughout the country. Many downed trees and flash floods were reported.[14] In Manteigas, floods and landslides caused major damage.[16] Four vehicles were dragged into the Zêzere River. Heavy rain extended to as far out as Braga. Covilhã saw 67.2 millimetres (2.65 in) of rain while Viseu saw 62 millimetres (2.4 in) of rain. Minor wind and flooding damage was reported in both Lisbon and Setúbal. The Portugese government issued a "state of calamity" after Danielle passed by.[17] Spain saw heavy rain when Danielle hit.[18] Multiple warnings were in place for Ireland as the storm's high winds and heavy rain passed through.[19] One man was in serious condition when he was swept away and went into Cardiac arrest. The mayor of Manteigas, Flavio Massano, stated that the damage was severe, quoting "Several vehicles were swept away by the force of the water, there are houses and businesses affected, roads, public lighting, water and sanitation infrastructures, sports and recreational equipment, among others".[16]
