Hurstville Football Club (formally Hurstville Zagreb Football Club) is a soccer club based in the southern Sydney suburb of Hurstville, New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The club was founded on 23rd November 1970 as Hurstville Zagreb Social and Soccer Club to bring together young Croatian Australians families in and around the St. George district to play football (soccer).[1] The club is referred to as simply 'Zagreb' by fans.

History[edit]

The reference to Zagreb (the capital city of Croatia) in the club's name is because of their Croatian heritage. Zagreb has become the second largest Croatian soccer club in Sydney, after Sydney United 58 FC. After the formation of the Club in November 1970 they applied for and entered the St. George Football Association in 1971.[1] The club continues to present to be involved with this association at junior and amateur levels, where the club has won numerous honours through the years.[2]

In 1974 Zagreb entered the NSW Inter Suburban 3rd Division and finished 8th out of 12 teams in their first season. In 1988 in the same division they finished first and repeated the feat in 1989, however the competition was renamed NSW Division 5 in that season.[1]

In the 2004 and 2005 seasons the club played in the State Super League. In 2013 the club, led by coach Steve Zoric, won the NSW Division 2 Premiership.[1] The club currently plays in the NSW State League Division 2, the 5th tier in NSW, and finished runner ups by three points to Dunbar Rovers FC in the 2015 season.[3]

Every year since 1977 Zagreb also hosts the Martin Knežević Cup to honour the memory of former player, coach and friend, Martin Knežević. Knežević's life was tragically cut short at the age of 22 in 1996.[4]

In 2010, Zagreb celebrated its 40th anniversary with a gala night at the Croatian Club Punchbowl, which featured all the players from the original 1971 team as well as the 2010 team.

At Football NSW's annual Silver Medal Dinner awards ceremony, captain Vjekoslav Steve Zoric was named as New South Wales State League Division One player of the season.

The current home ground for the NSW State League teams is St. George Stadium and the juniors and seniors play out of Carss Bush Park.[5]
