Hwal Moo Do (Korean: 활무도/活武道), Hwalmoodo or HMD (literally translated: "the way of life-defense") is a self-defense martial art created by Grandmaster Kun Hwa Lee. It incorporates kicking techniques part of Korean martial arts tradition and techniques from Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Karate, Hapkido, Judo, Jujitsu and Kickboxing. The practice of Hwal Moo Do includes the training of both traditional movements and kickboxing as well as self-defense techniques.

Philosophy

The foundation of Hwal Moo Do is the life-defense (Hwal Moo) in its broadest sense. This includes self-defense, recognizing and avoiding dangers, having a healthy lifestyle, protecting loved ones, staying safe and setting a good example. The teaching of Hwal Moo Do is based on four eastern philosophical movements:[1] (1) Confucianism in regards to the discipline and justice (2) Sun Tzu, The Art of War in regards to the strategy (3) Taoism in regards to the "wu wei" concept (4) Buddhism in regards to the four noble truths and some meditation techniques.

From a practical point of view, Hwal Moo Do mixes the traditional martial art with modern Kickboxing training and self-defense techniques.

History

Although Hwal Moo Do was created by Grandmaster Kun Hwa Lee in the late 20th century, it has its roots dating back to an elite warrior group during the Silla Kingdom (57 BC – 935 AD) in Korea named the Hwarang.[2][3] The knowledge of those warriors was handed down to the next generation enabling the creation of first martial arts in Korea among which the Subak and the Taekkyon. From these first original disciplines descend then the Tae Kwon Do and the Tang Soo Do. Especially the Tang Soo Do differentiated from other Korean styles because of the inclusion of techniques coming from Chinese martial arts and Japanese martial arts. And it is from the Tang Soo Do that Grandmaster Kun Hwa Lee[4] branches off, creating the Hwal Moo Do which has the specific characteristic of being constantly evolving by mixing the traditional training with the modern techniques.[1]

Competitions

Kickboxing is the main fighting sport practiced in Hwal Moo Do and most of the schools are members of WAKO[5] (World Association of Kickboxing Organizations). Hwal Moo Do fighting teams usually take part in major national and international competitions organized by WAKO, although there have been fighters in MMA, Submission, Tae Kwon Do, K1 and Muay Thai. In addition to that, Hwal Moo Do schools also organize internal tournaments with the intent of allowing beginners to gain their first experiences.
