Kim Young-kyun (Korean: 김영균, born on May 11, 1999), better known by the stage name Hwiyoung (Korean: 휘영), is a South Korean rapper, singer, songwriter, actor and dancer. Signed under FNC Entertainment, he debuted as a member of South Korean boy group SF9 in 2016, of which he is one of the rappers and sub-vocalists of the group.
Early life
Hwiyoung was born Kim Young-kyun in Jecheon, Chungcheong Province on May 11, 1999. He was raised by his parents and has an older sister.
Career
Pre-debut
He was revealed to be a trainee of FNC’s trainee system NEOZ School on December 17, 2015.[1] He was a participant of the survival show d.o.b: Dance or Band as a member of the NEOZ Dance Team.[2] On June 29, 2016, he and the other eight members of the same team won the competition, in which their official name was subsequently revealed to be SF9 (Sensational First 9, later Sensational Feeling 9) afterward.[3]
2016-present: Debut with SF9 and solo activities
He debuted as a member of SF9 on October 5, 2016 with the single album Feeling Sensation.[4]
In 2018, Hwiyoung participated on the second season of Mnet’s reality hip hop survival show High School Rapper.[5] However, he was eliminated early in the competition.[6]
On March 2, 2021, Hwiyoung renewed his exclusive contract with FNC Entertainment.[7]
He and the other members of SF9 were announced to be participating in the 2021 reality survival show Kingdom, which aired every Thursday on Mnet between April 1 and June 3, 2021[8], arriving in sixth place.[9]
On October 13, 2021, it was announced that Hwiyoung, along with fellow groupmate Dawon, had tested positive for COVID-19, while the other members tested negative. Both underwent self-quarantine and delayed all of their scheduled activities.[10]
Controversies
On January 27, 2022, it had been reported that he and Chani had been booked by the police for violating COVID-19 prevention regulations after going to a drinking pub in Nonhyeon on January 18, a day after the latter's birthday.[11]
