Hybrid Nightmares is an Australian Black Metal band from Melbourne, Australia. Formed in 2007 by drummer Adam Chapman and bassist Jon Kruk.

Originally the band referred to their genre as Hybrid Metal. An idea of not sticking to one clear genre. But over time this idea was abandoned and Black Metal became their main genre.

History

Formation

Founded in 2007 when Adam and Jon met at a show at EV's Youth Centre in Croydon, where Adam's previous band A.D Massacre was playing.

upon seeing the band Jon asked to join on bass. But when Adam was let go from the band shortly after, the pair decided to form their own band instead.

Taking on the name Hybrid Nightmares they began a search for band members.

Ben Plant was an old school friend of Jon that joined on guitar. With just the three of them they started writing music, with Jon taking the main writer position and Ben also contributing songs.

They began searching for vocalists. Originally wanting to have a clean singing female vocalist and a growl vocalist. They reached out to Loki Robson after hearing a demo song on Myspace by Corpse Raven. He went to the audition with his friend Matt. Both were offered roles in the band. With Loki taking on vocals and Matt on Guitar. A female singer did audition and agree to join the band. But later resigned and lost contact.

The Hybrid Inquisition - EP

Recorded at a house studio in Lilydale, The Hybrid Inquisition was a basic recording of five songs which saw the band travel to Sydney and play the Emergenza band competition (finishing in the top 5) along with fellow Melbourne band Orpheus Omega. There are limited copies of The Hybrid Inquisition in the world

Matt decided to leave Hybrid Nightmares to pursue playing live with Aural Window. Hybrid Nightmares held auditions for a new guitarist and welcomed Travis Hall to the band.

Hybrid Nightmares - EP

Recorded at Pony Studios by Troy Mccosker, The Self Titled EP saw Hybrid Nightmares start to get some growth as a band. At this time they began all wearing corpse paint. As opposed to only Jon and Loki wearing it. Blood was also introduced more regularly to the live show.

At the end of 2012 Trav made the decision to leave the band, and Michael joined on guitar.

Hybrid Nightmares were offered their first international support slot. Supporting Enslaved at Max Watts in Melbourne.

The Ages (2014-2016)

In 2014 Hybrid Nightmares begun working on their new release. A four part anthology titled the Ages. Each EP consisted of five songs and were released every 3 months during 2015. This project was recorded in the home studio of guitarist Ben Plant.

Release Date
The First Age Jan 2015
The Second Age April 2015
The Third Age July 2015
The Fourth Age Oct 2015

For each EP released Hybrid Nightmares updated and added to their stage costume. Starting with white robes and adding leather armour and becoming more military by the fourth age.

During the Ages tour cycle Hybrid Nightmares toured Japan for the first time, supporting Finntroll.

The Ages proved to be a big growing time for Hybrid Nightmares and solidified them as a local headliner and go to for International support.

Almagest (2017-2018)

Returning to record a full album at Pony Studios with Troy Mccosker. Hybrid Nightmares set out to create a concept album.

The concept for Almagest was based on the renaissance theory of the planetary spheres and the alchemical association between planets and natural elements and their relationship to gods/deities. Told through the perspective of an automaton making their way through the planets.

Hybrid Nightmares toured with many international acts during this time including Cradle of Filth, Ihsahn and Eluveitie.

Jon made the decision to leave the band. Supporting Ihsahn was his final show

Michael and the band split during the same time frame.

Hybrid Nightmares released Obelisk at Max Watts in Melbourne. Their biggest headline show to date.

COVID 19 & Woeful Inertia (2020-2024)

Writing for Woeful Inertia had already begun and Hybrid Nightmares went into 2020 with plans of touring and a new album. Unfortunately due to COVID 19 these plans were stopped or slowed. With meeting up to work on the album not possible, online sessions took over. Which the band found hard and it was difficult to move things along. Stressful writing and band direction caused tension within the band, which led to Ben Plant making the decision to leave the band. Zach also decided to leave to follow other musical passions.[2]

prior to the album launch, Johnny also decided to leave and focus on other projects. Johnny did return to play the album launch as his last show.
