Hyku is part of Samvera open-source digital repository solutions.[1] Text for this wiki page is based on the Hyku documentation provided on Samvera Wiki space which is licensed under CC BY 4.0 International.
Hyku is a digital repository application for managing cultural heritage content, which began as the Hydra-in-a-Box project. Based on Hyrax, it offers an easy-to-install, easy-to-configure, feature-rich solution supporting next-generation web technologies. Hyku reduces barriers to effective asset management and preservation for collections and content types of many kinds, and is supported by a vibrant and ever-growing open source community.[2]
Building on Hyrax, Hyku has a long list of features and distinctions, including:
- Multi-tenancy, or the ability to host multiple repository “slices” within the same application, each with its own users, objects, and look & feel
- Support for the IIIF Image and Presentation APIs
- Support for harvesting metadata and content via ResourceSync
- Rich object viewing using the Universal Viewer
- Two bundled work types: Image Work and Generic Work
- and more![2]
History
Initially developed under the “Hydra-in-a-Box” label, the product of this collaborative effort is Hyku, a next-generation repository solution. "Hyku works for institutions large and small, incorporating the capabilities and affordances to support networked resources and services in a shared, sustainable, national platform. The overall intent is to develop a digital collections platform that is not just "on the web," but "of the web."[3]
With funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services Archived 2019-05-01 at the Wayback Machine, the collaborative project kicked off[4] in 2015. In 2017, Hyku entered beta, and in February 2019, it was promoted out of Samvera Labs. Ongoing development of Hyku is guided by the Samvera community via the Hyku Interest Group and associated partners.[2]
Hyku 3.0 was released in February 2021[5]
