Hyliion Inc. is an American based company operating out of Austin, Texas, which specializes in developing hybrid and electric drive-trains for commercial trucks.[1]

History[edit]

Founding (2015-2017)[edit]

Hyliion Inc was founded in 2015 by Thomas Healy with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions associated with the transport industry. From 2015 until 2017 Hyliion focused on developing a hybrid-electric solution that could be retrofitted onto existing class 8 trucks. This was an alternate solution to competitors who were designing new electric trucks from the ground up. Hyliion's retrofitting was designed to provide owners with the leverage of their current assets while also benefiting from fuel savings and reduced fuel emissions.

Production development (2017-2019)[edit]

In 2017, Hyliion introduced its Hybrid diesel system which could be installed on any Class 8 vehicle, regardless of manufacturer. This design worked by replacing the semi-trailers passive axle with an intelligence electric drive system.[2]

Expansion and Public Offering (2020-2021)[edit]

In 2020, Hyliion unveiled its Hypertruck ERX solution, which was an electric powertrain for Class 8 trucks that utilized on board natural gas as an energy source. This system was designed to provide extended range than typical electric trucks while providing fuel savings associated with natural gas. In 2020, Hyliion also went through a public merger with Tortoise Acquisition Corp through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC)[3]. This merger valued Hyliion at $1.5 billion and provided $560 million in proceeds to accelerate its developing and future R&D projects.

2022 - Present[edit]

Early 2022, Hyliion announced it would move away from the development and release of the Hybrid eX system due to the competitive landscape. Hyliion also had to delay the production of the Hypertruck ERX by 12 months for further refinement and testing. In August 2022, Hyliion announced its purchase the fuel agnostic generator technology from GE.
