Hypoxico, Inc. is a New York City based company founded in 1996 that develops normobaric altitude training systems for athletes in a wide range of athletic disciplines. It is the first[1] company to use a hypoxic environment to improve physical performance as well as aid altitude acclimatization and benefit general health. Altitude systems allow athletes who live at sea level to receive the benefit of altitude training without having to commute to high altitude. Hypoxico’s products have found a broad client base among athletes from olympic level[2] to casual athletes because of the benefits of altitude training.

How it works[edit]

Hypoxico altitude systems changes the percentage of oxygen in the air as opposed to changing it by altering air pressure. Hypoxico uses the pressure swing adsorption method to create an artificial atmosphere that has lower oxygen levels but a normal barometric pressure. This allows training systems to be used without a pressure vessel at any altitude.

Products[edit]

Hypoxico, Inc. manufactures and sells altitude tents,[3] altitude masks, and hypoxic air generators (also known as a hypoxicator), to facilitate Intermittent hypoxic training,[4] hypoxic sleep training and hypoxic exercise training. Hypoxico, Inc. also has converted entire rooms to a low oxygen environment. The company also has an array of accessories to improve training and comfort. Notably, the high altitude adapter allows high altitude training and acclimatization up to an elevation of 28,290 feet (8,620 meters).

Uses[edit]

Hypoxico has been applied most notably to endurance sports including top athletes in running and swimming[5] but has been used in many sports with significant positive results. It has also been used by high altitude climbers and other professionals who work at high altitude to pre acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness. Research has also shown therapeutic application to the technology as well such as. Specifically research has shown that hypoxic air treatment has improved walking speed and duration for patients with incomplete spinal cord injury.[6]
