The Elite i20 is the second generation Hyundai i20 produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. It is a premium hatchback and employs the company’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’ design philosophy. It was developed at Hyundai’s Design Centre at Rsheim, Germany. Apart from new exterior and interior styling elements, the Elite i20 also features a new 1.4-litre diesel engine. The car also has a higher ground clearance than before, 170mm as against 165mm of the old i20. The Elite i20 has 285 litres of boot space, and features a dual-tone colour scheme in the interiors.
The Elite i20 was launched on 11th Aug.[1] in Delhi, India and offered in 10 variants. The nomenclature remains the same- Era, Magna, Sportz, Sportz (option pack), and Asta.
Design[edit]
The design of the car is influenced by the traditional 'hatchback', which has been enhanced by the 'Fluidic Sculpture 2.0' design philosophy that the company has employed more recently. The design for the car has been developed at Hyundai's design facilities in Rsheim, Germany.
Some of the design features of the new Elite i20 include - trapezoidal fog lamps, Black C pillar block, wrap around tail lamps, re-worked headlights and the hexagonal front grille. The interiors feature a black and beige dual tone dashboard, multi – steering mounted audio controls, Bluetooth integrated 2 Din audio with USB and Aux-inputs with 1 GB internal storage, rear AC vents, a dedicated engine start stop button, and automatic temperature control. The Elite i20 also has an Antilock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), two airbags and a reverse parking camera.[3]
Variants[edit]
Ten variants of the Hyundai Elite i20 have been launched in India, the petrol versions of the car are - the Hyundai Elite i20 ERA 1.2 P, the Hyundai Elite i20 Magna 1.2 P, the Hyundai Elite i20 SPORTZ 1.2 P, the Hyundai Elite i20 SPORTZ (O) 1.2 P and the Hyundai Elite i20 Asta 1.2 P.[4] The diesel variants on offer are the Hyundai Elite i20 ERA 1.4, the Hyundai Elite i20 Magna 1.4 D, the Hyundai Elite i20 Sportz 1.4 D, Hyundai Elite i20 Sportz (O) 1.4 D and the Hyundai Elite i20 Asta 1.4 D.
Marketing and positioning[edit]
In terms of positioning for the Indian market, the petrol versions of the Hyundai Elite i20 will compete with the Fiat Punto Evo, the Volkswagen Polo, the Maruti Swift ZXi and the Nissan Micra. In the diesel variants the car is expected to take on the Maruti Swift ZDi in addition to the Fiat Punto Evo, Volkswagen Polo.[5]
Engine[edit]
The Elite i20 is powered by 1.2L Kappa Dual VTVT Petrol Engine and 1.4L U2 CRDi Diesel Engine. The petrol engine produces 83 bhp of power and 115Nm torque. Meanwhile, the diesel engine produces 90 bhp of power and 220Nm torque. [6]
Features[edit]
The Elite i20 is designed with black color C-pillars that adds a sporty element. The new i20 also has wraparound automatic headlamps with dual tone R16 diamond cut alloy wheels. The front deck of the car has a blue and white illuminated cluster with a multi-information display screen. The car also features a 2 DIN Audio system with 1GB internal memory, which can connect to mobile devices with the help of USB and AUX ports. The fully automatic temperature control with cluster ionizer helps the car maintain freshness.
For safety, the Elite i20 features a rear parking camera that is sensitive to the steering angle, curve and steering position to guide the vehicle in reverse. A one-touch function is also present on board to warn lane change intentions as an added safety measure.
