IDare is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization based in Amman, Jordan that works with young people between the ages of 18-30 years old. The organization operates based on the approach of Community Behavioral Change; also referred to as social norm.[1] in order to create impact that support their stated values of collaboration, justice, youth agency, life-long learning and creativity[2]

Approaches[edit]

As stated by the organization, young people are able to identify contemporary issues, causes, and positive behavioral change in society. IDare states that they operates under the assumption that the youth can lead developmental change and produce real results for others affected by these changes.

Youth-led initiatives[edit]

People participate in programs and projects design and implement youth-led initiatives. This involves creating any sort of initiative that has a cause and serves the greater community. This youth-led initiative can be a starting point toward practicing social entrepreneurship.

Projects[edit]

Alternative Narrative (Albada’alya)[edit]

Since 2016, IDare has created projects around the alternative narrative for hate speech and violent extremist content in both the Arabic and English languages.[3] The alternative narrative content is expressed in different formats: audio (podcast), short videos, songs, long articles and YouTube programs.

100QV: 100 Questions on Violence was the first campaign launched through Albada'alya (the alternative narrative); it included questions on violence and hate speech and provided contextual information about the nature of hate speech online.[4]

Speak and Cook: Speak and Cook is a dialogue method that IDare uses in order to initiate discussions around topics related to the Alternative Narrative.

idare_to_love_speech: After observing a trend of online hate speech and harmful language in Jordanian print and mass media, IDare and Al Rai Centre for Strategic Studies hosted a national conference attended by journalists and politicians to discuss the issue. IDare organizers and national leaders spoke about the political and educational causes of hate speech and their repercussions.[3]

  1. idare_to_love_speech focused on productive dialogue by social media users and bringing attention to the issue of hate speech to make it less common in online spaces.[5]

Articipate[edit]

Articipate is an approach to create youth participation and self expression through art; theater, comics[6][7][8], fire theater, rap, music and art installations. Articipate is one method used to for developing technical skills while expressing oneself within their community. The idea is meant to find an intersection between art and activism, and create a channel through which participants can express themselves to each other and their communities.[9]

Salamorai[edit]

Salamorai is a platform that uses video content to feature the work of the youth through IDare's different projects and programs as a means of creating their own youth-led initiatives.

Tabir[edit]

In 2018, IDare and Wapikoni Mobile (Canada) created the Tabir project (which translates to ‘Expression’). The project attempted to build youth expression and entrepreneurship. In addition to the building of technical skills, the 6-month project culminated in 7 short videos showing the culture of Ajloun.[10][11][12][13]

Comicipate[edit]

In 2018, IDare paired with the Spanish Cooperation in Jordan and the Spanish Embassy for “Y’ani. In the Name of Peace,” a comic book created and curated by young artists to comment on social phenomena that they found important. The comic book featured themes of peace, tolerance and social cohesion through storytelling. The included stories featured stories of characters that emulated their artists’ families, and they were put on exhibition at Instituto Cervantes in Amman after their publication.[14]

UNSCR-2250[edit]

In 2017, IDare implemented a project in Jordan related to how the Jordanian youth envision a practical translation for the UNSCR-2250. Through the work that lasted for 18 months with 90 young people from Jordan, the youth released a recommendation: A practical translation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2250 in Jordan in Arabic and in English.[15] The UN Deputy Secretary General, Amina Mohammed, visited the IDare youth center in Amman.[16]

Prevention of Violent Extremism[edit]

IDare reached a set of recommendations for local interventions when working on the Prevention of Violent Extremism based on its work which included an action research in 2017. The referenced video summarizes the recommendations for local interventions in Arabic[17] and in English.[18]

IDare Italy[edit]

IDare Italy shares goals with the organization, but shifts the focus to Italy’s social, economic, and political development status.[19]
