Ian Bloom (born February 15, 1990) is an American artist, filmmaker, actor, musician, and author born in Hollywood, Los Angeles. His practice spans film, recorded music, literature, painting, photography, performance, and publishing.

Bloom writes, directs, produces, photographs, and performs in his own films. He also writes, performs, arranges, and produces his own rock records and is the author of sixteen books encompassing fiction, screenplays, interviews, poetry, and philosophical prose.

Early life and education

Bloom was born and raised in Los Angeles. He developed early interests in mythology, Renaissance art, architecture, cinema, literature, music, and aesthetics.

He attended Chaminade College Preparatory and was named a National Merit Commended Scholar. At sixteen, he studied art history and narrative film at Columbia University. At seventeen, he studied American political science and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley. He later attended the New York University Stern School of Business.

While living in New York, Bloom worked at Black Frame across art publications, fashion presentations, jewelry, and image archives. His subsequent training included acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, television production, editing, design, drawing, art history, and computer science.

Career

Bloom’s work is organized around independent authorship across multiple media. He describes this approach as “total authorship,” treating creation, performance, production, publication, documentation, and distribution as parts of a single artistic practice.

Writing and publishing

Bloom wrote The Western Road at twenty-one and Screwdriver at twenty-three. He subsequently wrote fiction, screenplays, interviews, poetry, and philosophical prose, including Savage Recreation, Chaos Free, Simulation, Victory’s Judge, The Interviews, Star Vehicle, Manifest Destiny, New York, King Kong, Fate, Real Life, Driver, Raw Canvas, and King.

Screwdriver was first published in paperback in 2016. Hardcover editions of Bloom’s books began appearing in 2024.

Film

In 2016, Bloom made Driver, a twenty-three-minute film for which he served as writer, director, producer, cinematographer, editor, sound designer, and lead actor.

Bloom subsequently made the feature films Star Vehicle, King, and Big Time. In Star Vehicle, he performs the dual leading roles of the Star and the Suit. King is a dialogue-free neo-noir feature in which he plays an art dealer. Big Time is a one-man feature set in New York, with Bloom as the sole on-screen performer in the role of the Gangster.

Star Vehicle was completed in 2025. King and Big Time entered post-production following principal photography.

Music

Bloom writes, performs, produces, arranges, and records his own music, including vocals, guitar, and bass.

He released his debut rock album, Swagger, in 2025. His subsequent recording projects include Laid, Swagger II, Swagger III, Golf, Know, and Meet Ian Bloom. Recorded in 2026, Golf is a ten-track instrumental hard-rock album.

Visual art

Bloom’s visual-art practice includes painting, drawing, and photography. His catalogue contains paintings made in Los Angeles and New York and photographs produced in Paris, Chicago, Los Angeles, and other locations.

Selected works include Road No. 1, Los Angeles, Road, New York, Fire, New York, Ocean, New York, Road, Los Angeles, Head of War, Paris, The Light Well, Chicago, The Black Figure, Chicago, and The Red Room, Chicago.

Publishing and distribution

In 2025, Bloom established NATURAL as the independent publishing, presentation, and commercial framework for his work. It manages publications, editions, exhibitions, documentation, provenance, and sales.
