Early life[edit]
At a young age, Orcaz began taking piano lessons, however he stated that "it isn’t relevant because I really don't remember anything from that time".[4] Prior to getting into music full time, he was "washing dishes, bussing tables, and attending school".[5]
2013–2014: Origins[edit]
In 2013, Orcaz self-released his debut album as isqa, titled Tetraform, on June 30.[6] The following year on June 9, Orcaz released his first EP as isqa, Melancolor, on Belgian label DUSTLA.[7] He followed it up with the EP Sleeper later that year on October 3.[8]
He released the song OMW on SoundCloud as the first song from his second project, No Mana, on November 29.
2015–2019: No Mana, [Redacted], and (Cloaked)[edit]
On March 12, 2015, Orcaz debuted on deadmau5's label mau5trap as No Mana with the EP 1UP, the first in a long running series of "UP" EPs that would continue into 2019.[9] No Mana, a project influenced by electro house, trance, and techno, marked a significant departure from the more dubstep-focused sound of isqa. The 2UP, 3UP, and 4UP EPs were released on April 10, May 7, and August 6, respectively.
Orcaz's second album as isqa, [Redacted], was self-released on August 18.[10]
On September 5, Orcaz played his first live show at the Allentown Fair in Allentown, Pennsylvania as the opening act for deadmau5.
The 5UP EP was released on December 11.
Throughout 2016, the 6UP, 8UP, 9UP, and Game Over EPs were released, with the seventh "UP" EP noticeably being skipped.
On February 13, 2017, Orcaz released the third isqa EP, (Cloaked). The 10UP, Above The Blue, and 11UP EPs were additionally released throughout the year. Psycho, a collaboration with labelmate Rezz, was released on December 1.[3]
2018 saw the release of the No Mana EPs 12UP, Assorted Repetitions, 13UP, and Melted Candy, as well as a self-released techno remix of Knife Party's Sleaze with longtime friend i_o.
In 2019, the final entry in the UP series (as of October 2023), 14UP, was released on January 22. Three days later, a remix of a mashup Orcaz had made as isqa sometime in 2015, SSUPTETSUADLLYDFRA (Stylishly Sugary Uptown Queen That Earned To Shut Up And Danced Loudly Like You Do For Real Again), was released by British bass musician Chime. On April 8, Orcaz released an isqa remix of American producer Eprom's 2013 song Hurricane.[upper-alpha 1] Several other No Mana singles were released through the year.
2020–present: Current activity[edit]
— Orcaz, on his Twitter page
On February 14, 2020, Orcaz released his debut album as No Mana, Secret Level.[11] A companion EP of additional material titled Secret, Secret Level was released on October 16.[12]
In 2021, Orcaz organized a compilation album, titled Electromag, which was released on September 10. "I gathered a bunch of friends and idols to forge a hammer that beats a dead horse that is electro house AKA 'best genre.'"[13]
After almost 3 years of inactivity, Orcaz announced his return as isqa in the summer of 2022 after REZZ played his 2014 song Ghosts during her show at EDC.[14] Later that year on October 12, Orcaz debuted a 31-minute mix of unreleased music, as well as new versions of past songs, titled i should've been dead.[14]
On November 28, the fourth isqa EP, i 4ove you, was announced. It was released on December 8 on REZZ's label, HypnoVizion Records, with it being the label's first release from someone other than REZZ herself.[15][16] The EP contained two new songs, as well as two reworked versions of previously released songs; all four were debuted in his i should've been dead mix two months prior.
On May 12, 2023, Orcaz played his first live show as isqa at The Untz Festival in Browns Valley, California.
Orcaz released his first solo single as isqa since 2015, always running, on June 30. On the same day, he posted a statement to his Twitter page celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the project, as well as explaining his reasons for having deleted much of his discography over the years and why releases had been so sparse.
He played his second show as isqa on September 1, opening for REZZ at her Red Rocks show.[17]
Name[edit]
On the topic of the name "No Mana" in an interview, Orcaz stated, "To Polynesian culture, ‘mana’ is the spirit or supernatural things, like power and effectiveness. To games, it's the shit that allows you to cast a fireball. To me, it's a name that I can hold onto for creative purposes. To my listeners, it's whatever you want it to be."[5]
Influences[edit]
Orcaz has cited artists like deadmau5, Eric Prydz, Above & Beyond, Joe Harston, Wolfgang Gartner, Justice, Proxy, The Bloody Beetroots, Phonat, Xilent, and "all the super cool 2010-era electro stuff that sits on SoundCloud and never made it to the surface" as influences for No Mana.[5]
His influences for isqa include Culprate, 16bit, Sorrow, Xilent, and KOAN Sound.[4]
