Ian B. Davidson (born December 6,1931) is an American businessman and Chairman Emeritus of D.A. Davidson Companies.[1], a financial services business headquartered in Great Falls, Montana. Ian joined his father's brokerage firm, D.A. Davidson, in 1958. He has held former positions such as CEO and President of the company.

Early Life[edit]

Born in 1931, Davidson grew up in Montana. In 1935, his father David Adams Davidson opened his own branch of E.J. Gibson brokerage firm in Great Falls, Montana. Later, David bought the majority stock of E.J. Gibson and renamed the company D.A. Davidson & Co., keeping Great Falls as the official headquarters of the company. In 1958, Ian joined his father's company as its third employee. He attended Great Falls High School in Montana.

Career[edit]

After high school, he attended college at University of Montana. He graduated in 1953 and was involved in ROTC program. Shortly after, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Solana Beach, a small beach town north of San Diego, California. He served in the Air Force for two years until 1955. Davidson continued his education at UC Berkeley, where he gained an MBA upon his completion at Berkeley.

One of the jobs offered for Davidson after graduate school was to be a professor at University of Montana. He accepted the job, and taught finance at the university for a year. It was in 1958 when Davidson joined his father's firm and began to established himself as the businessman he is known as today. Notable experiences for Davidson include the ringing of the closing bell at the NYSE in 2009, closing the Chicago stock exchange and opening the NASDAQ in the 1990s[2]. He served as CEO of D.A. Davidson, as well as President until his resignation in 2012. He now serves as the company's Chairman Emeritus. Today, the company has grown to 1,500 employees in 100 offices in 28 states[3]. Ian is well respected in many communities for his philanthropic actions he and his family have taken over the past several years[4].

Personal Life[edit]

Davidson is married to Nancy (1961- present) and currently resides in Montana. Together they have three children. His son, Andrew Davidson, currently serves as President of Davidson Investment Advisors, a division within the company. Currently, Ian and his wife are focused on philanthropic acts and supporting organizations of which hold significant value to them.

Philanthropy[edit]

Ian and Nancy Davidson have been heavily involved in philanthropy, giving back to various communities over the years. Generous donations by the family include supporting facilities such as the University of Montana, Great Falls High School, and many more[5]. In 1996, the honors college at the University of Montana was dedicated the "Davidson Honors College" [6]. Today, it is home to more than 500 students with a welcoming and modern environment.

In 2018, Ian and Nancy donated $1.8 million to upgrade the auditorium at Great Falls High School[7]. The Davidson family also has quite an appreciation for western artist, Charles M. Russell and is one of the local C.M. Russell museum's biggest supporters. Their most recent act of philanthropy was in July 2020, when they donated funds towards expansion and improvements at the C.M. Russell museum in Great Falls, Montana[8]
