Ian Finley

Ian Finley is an educator and playwright living in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is the author of the "Our Histories" plays for Burning Coal Theatre Company, and served as the Piedmont Laureate in 2012.[1]

Biography[edit]

Finley was born in Price, UT and received a BFA from the University of Utah's Actor Training Program. He received an MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University's Tisch School. He currently resides in Raleigh, North Carolina.[2]

Notable Plays[edit]

Finley's work with Burning Coal Theatre Company largely focused on histories of the Raleigh area. These site-specific "Our Histories" plays included the Oakwood cycle, the Fayetteville Street plays and 1960, written to commemorate the integration of Raleigh's schools at Murphey Elementary School.[3]

For these plays, Finley was named Piedmont Laureate in 2012.[4]

Finley is also the author of other works, including 11:50,[5] Suspense, Green Square, The Nature of the Nautilus,[6] and Up from the Ground (written for the Piedmont Laureate program),[7] as well as an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure.[8]

Interactive Fiction[edit]

Finley has also written a number of pieces of Interactive Fiction, including Klockwerk: The Shadow in the Cathedral (with Jon Ingold),[9] Kaged (winner of 2000 Interactive Fiction Competition),[10] Exhibition,[11] and Babel (XYZZY Award for Best Story, 1997).[12]

Work as an Educator[edit]

Finley served as Director of Education for Burning Coal Theatre Company from 2004 to 2012, and now serves as Chair of Fine Arts at Research Triangle High School.[13]
