Ian Sidaway (born 1951) is an English painter, landscape artist, illustrator and artists teacher. He is an established landscape artist with a particular interest in colour combinations, and a watercolour artist.
Biography[edit]
Ian Sidaway was born 1951 into a mining and clayworking community near Tamworth, Staffordshire. After completing a foundation course at Nuneaton school of art he went on to studygraphic design at Twickenham college of technology and went on to work for a short time in advertising.. After working for a brief spell as a designer he began to concentrate on painting in the early 1970s. For several years he worked as a builder, carpenter and gardener to supplement income. Throughout the 1980s and 90s he painted portraits to commission and began to illustrate books on art technique. He exhibited widely at Federation of British artists open exhibitions, the Royal Academy summer exhibition, Agnews gallery and various other galleries in London, Brighton and the USA. Through the 1980s he concentrated on commissioned portrait work. The 1990s bought another change in direction with book illustrations on various subjects including travel, food and gardening. He went on to write and produce his own books, with 32 titles written to date. There have been many contributions to various magazines on art technique and consultancy work on several art part works. He then began to illustrate practical art books for various authors before beginning to author his own books.
He have been a regular contributor to various art part works and practical art magazines. For several years he taught at summer painting courses workshops near Arezzo in Tuscany and Venice, Italy .
In 2008 he decided to do less publishing work and concentrate on producing works to exhibit. Of late work concentrates on the landscape in the UK and abroad. Water colour is the medium that he now favors. In 2010 he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.
Ian Sidaway work in a range of different materials but constantly return to watercolour. He use traditional transparent watercolour techniques, with paint being applied using a wide range of tools other than brushes. Current concerns and subject matter deal with the landscape both in the UK and abroad. Drawings and paintings are made on location together with photographs and written notes. Paintings are completed in the studio. Strong composition, design and solid draughtsmanship together with the simple pleasure of exploiting and using the materials are his constant concerns. His intentions are not to create a photographic representation but a synthesis of things seen, something that hints at ‘sense of place’.
