Idera is a rural village and traditional kingdom located in Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria. It is situated approximately 90 kilometres from Ilorin, the state capital. The community is primarily agrarian and is noted for community-led development initiatives and traditional leadership.

Geography

Idera is surrounded by natural vegetation and agricultural land typical of the Igbomina people of Kwara State. The area is largely rural, with a very peaceful environment that supports farming and small-scale commerce. Idera is a rural community located in Kwara State, Nigeria. It lies within the Igbomina region of the state and is surrounded by neighboring agrarian settlements. The area experiences a tropical savanna climate, characterized by distinct Raining and dry seasons with the harmattan spanning from November ending till late January which is typical of north-central Nigeria.

Demographics

The inhabitants of Idera are predominantly Yoruba, mainly of Igbomina origin. Farming is the principal occupation, with crops such as maize, millet, guinea corn, sorghum, and palm produce commonly cultivated. Small-scale trading and other local businesses also contribute to the local economy. They are also known for large-scale production of "Idera Garri"

Traditional leadership

Idera is a traditional kingdom currently ruled by His Royal Highness Oba James Oladipo Buremoh, the Onidera of Idera Kingdom. He ascended the throne in 2004.

Before his coronation, Oba Buremoh was a professional wrestler of international reputation, popularly known as “Ladi African Tiger.” Following his installation, he has emphasized community development and described his leadership philosophy as service-oriented.

Ladi African Tiger is a fascinating Nigerian monarch, former world champion wrestler, and NYC tour bus driver known for his incredible journey from the wrestling ring to royalty, using his earnings to develop his kingdom in Idera, Kwara State, while embodying humility and service as a "king". He trained in the US under wrestling legend "Big Cat" Ernie Ladd, became a champion in Nigeria, and later drove tour buses in New York to fund some community projects, demonstrating a unique commitment to his subjects.

Development initiatives

During his reign, several development projects have been undertaken within the community. These include the provision of potable water, road construction, renovation of the community dispensary, and the renovation and construction of classrooms through counterpart funding arrangements with the Kwara State Government.

A vocational training centre was also established in Idera to provide skills acquisition and employment opportunities for youths. The centre includes training programmes such as culinary studies and other vocational skills.

Many of these initiatives are supported through the Ladi Tiger Rural Development Foundation, founded by the monarch, with assistance from members of the traditional council, community stakeholders, and indigenes of the kingdom in the Nigerian diaspora.

Social welfare and community engagement

Social welfare programmes in Idera have included outreach to widows and other vulnerable residents. Support has been provided through philanthropic contributions from individuals and organisations within Nigeria and abroad.

Interfaith activities involving Christian and Muslim leaders in the community have also been recorded, emphasizing peaceful coexistence and unity as prerequisites for sustainable development.

Historical and cultural origins

Traditionally, many Yoruba communities, including those in present-day Kwara State, trace their ancestral origins to the ancient city of Ile-Ife in modern-day Osun State. According to oral history and academic studies of Yoruba ethnohistory, Ile-Ife is regarded as the cradle of the Yoruba people and the ancestral homeland from which numerous towns and kingdoms were founded through migration and settlement.

In Yoruba oral tradition, descendants of the progenitor figure Oduduwa and other migrants from Ile-Ife established political and cultural ties across what is now southwestern Nigeria. The Ooni of Ife, as the traditional ruler of Ile-Ife, has historically been regarded as a *primus inter pares* — a first among equals — among Yoruba kings, and is often associated with presenting symbols of authority to other paramount rulers during coronations, reflecting a form of traditional cultural primacy.

The broader Igbomina subgroup of the Yoruba (to which Idera belongs) is part of this larger historical framework. The cultural connection to Ile-Ife shapes traditional identity and common heritage among communities across Kwara and neighbouring states. Contemporary Yoruba leaders, including the Ooni of Ife, Ooni, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II) continue to emphasise these shared historical links in public engagements, encouraging recognition of ancestral roots and cohesion within the Yoruba cultural sphere.

Government support

The Idera Kingdom has received infrastructural support from the Kwara State Government, particularly during the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. Such support has included road construction projects within and around the community.

The traditional ruler has publicly acknowledged this support while advocating for additional infrastructure development and improved internet access to stimulate economic growth and reduce rural–urban migration.

Administrative context

Ifelodun Local Government Area was created in 1976 from the former Igbomina-Ekiti Local Government Area. Its headquarters is located in Share, and it comprises 18 wards with a population of 206,042 according to the 2006 census.

The local government area covers approximately 3,435 square kilometres and includes notable towns and villages such as Igbaja, Oke-Ode, Oro-Ago, Omupo, Idofian, Ganmo, Oke-onigbin and importantly Idera. Yoruba and English are the major languages spoken with some other settlers like the fulanis and nupe people

The area is agriculturally productive and contains mineral resources including granite, limestone, marble, dolomite, quartz, and kaolinite. Cultural festivals such as Egungun, Epa, Sango, and Alagbe dances are observed and nearby tourist attractions include Owu Falls (Owa Kajola), Oke-ora and Oke Agbonna Hills.

Idera is largely populated by Christians and a few number of indigenes are muslims with ECWA CHURCH being their major place of worship.
