Iginio Massari (born 29 August 1942) is an Italian pastry chef and chocolatier.
Iginio Massari was born in Brescia on 29 August 1942 to a cook and a canteen manager. At 16, after working in a bakery in the centre of his hometown, he moved to Switzerland to learn new techniques. He was mentored by Claude Gerber and acquired his first experience in pastry and chocolate. After four years, having completed his studies, he decided to return to Italy, but immediately after his return he was the victim of a serious motorcycle accident that forced him into a long period of immobility.
He was hired first at Bauli as manager of qualitative innovation (where he deepened his knowledge of leavened dough), then at Star as technical manager of the artisan and industrial sector. In 1971 he opened the Veneto pastry shop in Brescia with his wife, which ranked first in the selection of the Gambero Rosso guide from 2011 to 2016.
In 1997 and 2015 he participated in the Pastry World Cup, both times as coach of the Italian team. In March 2015, on the occasion of the food and wine event held at the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista in Venice, he was awarded the Golden Lion for his career.
Considered by many to be the leading figure in pandoro and panettone, he created a reinterpretation of the classic Milanese Christmas cake to pay homage to the Milan Expo 2015, combining tradition and innovation. During the universal exhibition itself, he retraced and illustrated the history of Lombard pastry in the area set up by Coldiretti, presenting to the public the typical sweets of the region.
He began to gain prominence as a television personality as a judge and regular guest starting from the second edition of MasterChef Italia, in conjunction with the pastry test. He was the tutor for the external rehearsals in the two editions of the programme The greatest pastry chef. Since 2016 he has been dispensing pastry tips before becoming a French Master Pastry Chef on Cielo. He participated in the specials on pastry for Christmas and Carnival broadcast by Sky Uno.
Since 2017 he has been the protagonist of the *Iginio Massari – The Sweetman* programme, where competitors try their hand at creating their best dessert. During the preparation, the chef corrects and follows them, judging them at the end of the test. In the *Iginio Massari – The Sweetman Pro* version, Massari was joined by professional pastry chefs; all episodes were broadcast by Sky Uno. During the same year he announced the opening of a new pastry shop in Milan.
In December 2017 he was invited, together with the journalist and food and wine expert Leonardo Romanelli, to the Brescia branch of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, to hold an open lesson aimed at analysing the relationship between food and wine and the world of the media. In addition to the historic Pasticceria Veneto in Brescia, he has inaugurated three more: the first on 14 March 2018, in Piazza Diaz in Milan, the second on 28 October 2019, in Piazza C.L.N. in Turin and the third on 15 December 2020, in Corso Santa Anastasia in Verona.
