Prof. Solomatins is a member of the following institutions: American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and European Society of Retina Specialists.

Work Experience[edit]

From 1987 to 1996, Prof. Solomatins worked at the Department of Ophthalmology of P. Stradiņš Clinical University as an eye doctor and surgeon. Worked as the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology of First Hospital of Riga, Latvia from 1996 to 1999.

In 1995, Prof. Solomatins founded Dr Solomatins Eye Rehabilitation and Vision Correction Centre in Riga, which is now widely popular under the name of Dr Solomatins Eye Centre.

Work Achievements[edit]

Dr Solomatins Eye Centre and its doctors are pioneers in the Baltic region at vision laser correction procedures with more than 20 years of experience.

In 1999 at the Eye Centre, Prof. Igors Solomatins and Dr Jana Gertnere commenced work on introduction and popularization of vision laser correction technology by executing the first excimer laser vision correction procedures in the Baltic States. Prof. Solomatins was the first doctor in the Baltic States who carried out a cataract laser operation, and currently the Eye Centre is the only eye clinic in the Baltic region that offers cataract operations with FemtoCataract laser technology.

The Eye Centre has started a new chapter in the book of Baltic ophthalmology also in terms of curing retinal diseases – the clinic doctors were the first ones who started offering such technology as corneal cross-linking and corneal ring laser implantation as keratoconus treatment; and were the first ones to carry out a corneal transplantation operation using laser technology.

Due to an active scientific activity both locally and internationally, Dr Solomatins Eye Centre quickly became the leading ophthalmology establishment in the Baltic region. In 2009, the Eye Centre commenced a new era of vision laser correction in the Baltic States offering the new generation femtosecond laser technology. Specialists of the clinic took part in the international clinical work devoted to developing the 3rd generation of laser correction technology – SMILE. It is a highly gentle vision laser correction method using Carl Zeiss VisuMax® femtosecond laser. The technology allows to carry out a vision correction not touching the tissue of cornea. This operation is suitable for patients with severe myopia (up to > -7,00 D) and is finished over the course of just one procedure.

Academic Achievements[edit]

Since 1993, Prof. Solomatins has been a lecturer of ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Latvia. Ophthalmology course is read both for Latvian and foreign students ever since it was renewed. Dr Solomatins has been active in developing recommendations for the course program and training. Igors Solomatins has published two textbooks: “Age-Related Macular Degeneration” and “Practical Questions on Ophthalmology for Family Doctors”.

In addition to teaching ophthalmology, Prof. Igors Solomatins guides students’ scientific and study papers. He is also the Head of the Scientific Ophthalmology Hobby Group of the University of Latvia.

Scientific Achievements[edit]

Scientific interests of Prof. Solomatins are related to cataract operations, exchange of the natural eye retina to an artificial lens, vision laser correction technologies, age-related hypermetropia correction with optical implants. Devoted to these topics, Prof. Solomatins has created many scientific publications and read many reports in conferences.

Igors Solomatins has been a researcher in nine clinical research works across the European Union. Currently he is working on the analysis of the results of a vast scientific research work on vision correction with excimer laser. The aim of the work is to improve the algorithm for the execution of vision laser correction for especially complicated cases (for example, very severe myopia or hypermetropia).

Prof. Solomatins takes part in the international research work devoted to improving the efficiency of the age-related retina pathology treatment. As a result of this research, a new model of a lens implant will be created. The model will allow to solve problems for age-related visual impairments both in case of myopia or hypermetropia.
