Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra (NBJK) is an non-governmental organisation that works with vision of just society in Jharkhand and Bihar states of India for holistic development of villages on issues of health, education, livelihood, small group support and advocacy. It is based in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand state in India and has presence in all districts of Jharkhand and Bihar through its network of over 300 NGOs under Lok Samiti.

The charity was founded in 1971 by four graduate engineers influenced by Gandhian[1] ideals gleamed from Mahatma’s autobiography - “Satya ke Prayog” or “The Story of My Experiments with Truth”. They were supported and guided by great revolutionary Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan to establish Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra

1971-1980[edit]

With the support of great Sarvodaya leader Loknayak Jay Prakash Narayan, 22.7 acre barren land was allocated to the organization Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra at Village Bahera, Chouparan (Hazaribag) by Bihar Bhoodan Yagna Committee under Bhoodan movement. NBJK got registered under Society Act in year 1974 and first grant was received as food grains, utilized in “Food for Work” program in drought hit villages of Chouparan to create water bodies & other infrastructures. During nationwide Emergency (25 June 1975-21 March 1977), Shri Satish Girija and Shri Girija Satish participated in JP movement, Shri Satish Girija was sent to Dhanbad jail, both have been discharged from their jobs and forced to vacate their official residence. Lok Samiti-People's Committee was established by JP with view to empower common people suffering from systemic injustice.

1981-1990[edit]

Shri Girija Satish and Shri Satish Girija left their job at Bokaro Steel Plant and came to NBJK for continuing the work of community development. NBJK started approaching other donor agencies for funds, for supporting development work. Branches of Lok Samiti was formed in many districts of Jharkhand and Bihar. Many prominent people like Mr. Kuldip Nayar, Acharya Ramamurti, Justice V. M. Tarkunde, Shri Surendra Mohan, Swami Agnivesh have supported to Lok Samiti's move. NBJK along with Lok Samiti started movement for Land and human rights-People’s right to work, creating ‘Just Society’ for all irrespective of any religion or caste, awareness and leadership development among youths for change.

1991-2000[edit]

NBJK along with people’s committee did expansion of organization/education/constructive works across 4500 villages in 35 districts of Jharkhand and Bihar State. Lok Samiti expanded with 37,500 general members & 15000 active members. Lok Samiti intervened upon issues of national & humanitarian importance, mass education, Govt. policies, communal harmony, environment, gender equality, right to work towards development. Opening of Family Counseling Centre with support of Central Social Welfare was done in June 1993.NBJK got Registration under 35 AC & 80G of Income Tax Act 1961. During 95-96, June 1995 celebrated as Total Revolution Month with conferences with Women, Dalit, Weaver & Tribal communities. Shri Girija Satish received Father Tong Memorial Award from Bihar Voluntary Health Association as NBJK declared as Best Community Health Organization. Disability Facilitation Action Centre was established to promote Community Based Rehabilitation by involving and capacitating small VOs. The program of Community Mental Health & Development with support of Basic Needs, U. K was launched.

2001-2010[edit]

During 2000-2001, Coordination Office of NBJK shifted to own building at village-Amrit Nagar near Hazaribag town. In year 2004, Lok Nayak Jay Prakash Eye Hospital at Bahera (Chouparan) with support of Sightsavers International, UK was initiated. In year 2007-08, 2nd unit of LNJP Eye Hospital at Dumka was started in April 2008 with support of CBM-Germany. Lord Buddha Home for Children, an orphanage started in 2004 at village-Silaunja (Bodhgaya) with support of SKB-The Netherlands. NBJK felicitated by Plan International India & Census Directorate, GoI for its achievement in Universal Birth Registration in Jharkhand Sate. NBJK started its social development work in various districts of Bihar and Jharkhand States with the grant support of more than 20 funding agencies and reached more than 30000 people in project areas.

2011-2020[edit]

NBJK got recognition under “Amazing Indians”-Mahindra “Spark the Rise” [2] and its work on eye care aired by Times Now TV channel on 1st February 2014. Mrs. Ine Buma-le Blanc, a dutch lady who established Lord Buddha Home for Children (LBHC) has received een lintje or Royal Decoration of The Netherlands for her outstanding work towards orphan children with NBJK at Bodh Gaya. NBJK is now had reached more than 3Lakh beneficiaries under, education, health, small initiative, skill development and poverty alleviation programs.

Advocacy, Networking and Governance[edit]

Family Counseling Centre, promoting Lok Samiti/People’s committee- Initiated by veteran Sarvodaya leader and freedom fighter Loknayak Jay Prakash Narayan (JP) on 30th June 1977 as a non-political organization to check and balance the dominance of bureaucracy as well as of elected representatives over governance.
