Ikatan Keluarga Madura or Ikatan Keluarga Madura Indonesia (Indonesian Association of the Madurese Family, IKAMA) is an ethnic association of the Madurese people in Indonesia. Established in 1974, IKAMA has served as a political and economic channel for the Madurese people who live outside of the Madura island, chiefly the 211,000 Madurese migrants in the capital Jakarta.[1]
Description[edit]
IKAMA was established in January 1974 by a group of Madurese; Amien Imron, Saat Samlan, Syukron Makmun, Hasan Basri, and others.[1] The organization provides assistance toward the Madurese and local communities chiefly in the Jakarta and Surabaya regions through the organization of local events such as Maulid, distribution of aid materials and free ambulance services.[4][5]
IKAMA also assist in forming the association of local businesses, such as the Sumenep Indonesia Grocery Traders Association (PPKSI), an advocacy institution for grocery traders, as almost every populated place in Jakarta has businesses operated by Madurese migrants.[6]
IKAMA as a political organization also provides endorsement toward political candidates during the election season. In 2020, IKAMA endorsed Machfud Arifin-Mujiaman Sukirno ticket for the Surabaya mayoral election.[7]
Mission and principles[edit]
The mission statement of IKAMA states the goal of IKAMA as follows:[1]
- To materialize IKAMA as a home for the struggle of the Madurese diaspora
- To materialize the welfare of the Madurese diaspora
IKAMA holds the following organizational principles:[1]
- The values of the teachings of Islam
- Pancasila
- Welfare of members
- Blend in while upholding the dignity of oneself, family, ethnicity, and origin
- Mutual respect
- Fostering brotherhood by respecting local culture
- Prioritizing deliberation in every problem faced
- "Di mana bumi dipijak di situ langit dijunjung" (When in Rome, do as the Romans do)
Organizational structure[edit]
IKAMA mainly consists of the Central Board which is headquartered in North Jakarta and the Jakarta Regional Board which is headquartered in South Jakarta. Each of the boards consists of the Advisory Board, Supervisory Board, Board of Daily Affairs, and the Secretary. The current heads of each of the boards are follows:
