Il diario di Mary e altri racconti (The Mary diary and others short stories) is a book containing an epistolary novel and short stories by Menotti Lerro. The volume was published in 2009 by Zona.[1]

Il diario di Mary Plot summary[edit]

The first part of the Il diario di Mary e altri racconti is presented as a collection of letters written by Mary, a young woman of highly sensitive and passionate temperament, and destined to her sister Luan who lives, after escaping from her home when she was very young to become a famous writer, in a North city of Italy. In these letters, Mary complains the sorrow she feels day by day living with her family, in particular with her father, who went insane since the two characters were children. Indeed, letters are not sent by Mary, limiting herself on writing, and trying to get the courage to send these, even if She is very afraid to cause pain to Luan.

The theme of insanity[edit]

As Andrew Mangham pointed out in The Poetry of Menotti Lerro.[2] Often in his work Lerro "attempts to deal with the problems raised by his father who “with the time and with continuous health problems has became more and more my son, my child”.[3] Therefore, also this book "continues a Lerroean tradition of looking closely at the author’s relationship with his father and allowing that bond to influence the shape and texture of his work.[4]
