Ilya Sukhar is an American entrepreneur and programmer. He is best known as the founder and CEO of Parse,[1] a mobile infrastructure company acquired by Facebook in 2013[2] In 2014, he was named on the Forbes 30 under 30 list[3] and joined Y Combinator (company) as a partner[4].

Background[edit]

Sukhar was born in Moscow. His family immigrated to the USA in 1989 and settled in Sunnyvale, California. He attended The Harker School for high school and then went to Cornell University where he earned a B.S. and an M.Eng. in Computer Science.

He started his career at Ooyala, where his manager later described him as having "an insane work ethic"[5]. In 2010, he helped start Etacts, a startup in San Francisco that was acquired by Salesforce less than year later[6].

Parse[edit]

Sukhar created Parse, a mobile infrastructure company, in 2011 after becoming frustrated with the programming work necessary to build mobile applications for his friends[7].

He was admitted to the Y Combinator program as a solo founder and teamed up with Tikhon Bernstam, Kevin Lacker, and James Yu to build the company. [8]

Facebook[edit]

Sukhar joined Facebook when it acquired his company and became a director of product, leading the Facebook Platform and Parse teams.[9]

He appeared on stage at Facebook's f8 conference in 2014 and 2015 alongside Mark Zuckerberg[10] and announced product updates to Parse and Facebook Platform.

Investing[edit]

Sukhar is an active investor in technology startups as an individual and as a partner of Y Combinator (company).
