Imon Mukherjee (born 20 March 2000) is an Indian independent singer, songwriter, and performer based in Kolkata, West Bengal. Known for pioneering alternative and psychedelic rock within the Bengali music scene, he represents the alternative rock genre from West Bengal on ReverbNation under the name Imon Mukherjee. He is widely recognized for his phrase "Joy Independent Music" and his efforts to bring global sounds into Bengali music.
Early Life and Education
Imon Mukherjee, originally named Sambarta Mukherjee, was born and brought up in Kolkata. Though his parents encouraged him to focus on academics, he followed his passion for music from a young age. He studied at Calcutta Public School and later graduated from Sir Gurudas Mahavidyalaya. He never underwent formal music training; instead, he learned through live performances, interactions with musicians, watching YouTube, and listening to various forms of music.
Career
Music
Imon Mukherjee is the founder and lead vocalist of the band Tandav Music. He formed the band along with his brother Sayan Sengupta, who later left the group in 2024. Previously, Imon was also a member of the band Journey to the Smoke, which disbanded in 2023. He has performed extensively as a solo artist, with Tandav Music, and formerly with Journey to the Smoke.
Imon Mukherjee collaborated with Sayan Sengupta on several songs as a solo artist. These songs featured lyrics by Sayan Sengupta, with vocals by Imon Mukherjee, and in some cases, Imon also contributed to the lyrics. Notable tracks from this collaboration include "Lasher Opor," "Megher Arale," "Bolo Amay," "Chap," and "Priyotoma."
Some of his notable solo songs include:
Kalo Kak
Gaibona Premer Gaan
Bodlatey Hobey
Jiboner Maney
Runwayr Rastai
Mrityur Rohossho
Bohudurey
With his band Tandav Music:
Nilche Kham
With Journey to the Smoke:
Bhejal Shomoy (popular in the Bengali indie scene)
December er Haway
Imon’s lyrics explore different perspectives on life — from the struggles and feelings of Kolkata’s people to global issues. While songs like Mrityur Rohossho and Runwayr Rastai highlight global themes, tracks such as Gaibona Premer Gaan, Jiboner Maney, and Bohudurey reflect Kolkata-based emotional and philosophical storytelling. He is often quoted saying:
"I love to write, make, sing songs for the people who cannot express some inner feelings and about my city 'Kolkata' because this city has faced many things from revolution to battles of life."
This sentiment is also reflected in one of his lyrics: "Tumi ki jano, tumi khuje pete paro, jiboner maney?"
Other Creative Work
Apart from music, Imon has directed and acted in short films such as Room of Disaster (available on the YouTube channel Krisscross) and has created an audio story series titled The Weekend Diary (on YouTube).
