Impeachment resolution against Mike DeWine
On November 30, 2020, Ohio representative John Becker along with Rep. Nino Vitale, Rep. Paul Zeltwanger and Rep. Candice Keller announced a House Resolution to impeach Ohio Governor Mike DeWine over his response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Ohio and abuse of power. [1] [2] [3]
Background[edit]
In August 2020, the four Ohio State Representatives published 10 articles of impeachment on Governor DeWine. [4] [5] The move was squashed by Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, Robert R. Cupp refused to take the articles of impeachment to a vote. [6]
After the first set of impeachment articles were drafted, polls took place over the entire state to see the people’s opinion about impeaching Governor DeWine. The ABC6/Fox28 Columbus poll generated 18,420 responses resulting in greater than 83 percent favoring impeachment. [7]The WSPD Toledo poll generated 1,599 responses resulting in 94 percent favoring impeachment. The Mahoning Matters poll generated 1,190 responses resulting in greater than 67 percent favoring impeachment. [8]
On November 19, Governor DeWine announced a 3 week curfew from 10pm to 5am. [9]
The resolution[edit]
The House resolution included 12 articles of impeachment against Governor DeWine.[10] [11][12] The articles state that Governor DeWine "violated the separation of powers doctrine established in the Ohio Constitution, committing acts of 'mismanagement, malfeasance, abuse of power and other crimes.'" [13]
Response[edit]
Governor DeWine called the impeachment articles foolish.[14] [15] [16]
