Impostor (Among Us)

The Impostor is one of the two possible randomly assigned roles in the 2018 social deduction game Among Us. Their goal is to kill off the crewmates in order to win.[1]

Role[edit]

The Impostor is a randomly assigned role that is designated to 1-3 players. It is privately assigned, although other impostors can who else is an impostor.[2] The aim of the game for the crewmates to find out and vote off the imposter. The Imposter must find and eliminate all of the Crewmates before they are found out.[3] Impostors are able to use vents to travel around maps quickly and are able to "sabotage" various parts of the map; this means they can cause lights to turn off and doors to close.[4][5]

The term "third impostor" is used for crewmates who secretly work together with the impostors.[6]

In-Game Lore[edit]

The Imposter is a parasitic shapeshifter who has replaced a Crewmate. They can see in the dark and do not need Oxygen.[7]

Impact[edit]

After the 2020 popularisation of Among Us, the Impostor inspired many fan creations. One example is a short story based upon the Impostor.[8]
