The Panpyscast Philosophy Podcast is a weekly online and downloadable podcast. Its main focus of discussion is philosophy, but it also branches into science, theology and psychology.[1]

The Panpyscast has been praised for having an accessible and easy to follow conversational tone. It aims itself at a wide-ranging audience: academics, philosophers, students and members of the public. [2] In the words of its founder and host, Jack Symes:

“[The Panpsycast] aims to awaken fellow free-thinkers worldwide and inspire a new generation of philosophers.”[3]

The Panpsycast has worked alongside institutions such as Culham St Gabriels, Westhill Endowment, the John Templeton Foundation, and the Institution for Arts and Ideas. It has 70,000 subscribers and regularly ranks in the top 10 education podcast on iTunes. According to the University of Liverpool, it is one of the most popular higher education podcasts worldwide.[4]

History[edit]

The Panpsycast came to form in early 2016, with its first episode launching on August 1st. The show's original hosts were Jack Symes, Andrew Horton, and Oliver Marley. [5] In an interview with the Philosophers’ Magazine, Symes explains that he created the podcast because of philosophy's importance in day to day life: in his own words, Symes was inspired to create a resource that made "good philosophy enjoyable and accessible" [6]

Early episodes were recorded at the University of Birmingham. According to the founder: “the first 15 episodes have poor audio quality, and are more comedy based than content-based".[7] Additional co-hosts joined later in the project, including Gregory Miller, Annabel Borthwick, Phoebe Light, and Thom Atkinson. Since its creation, the podcast has gained over 70,000 subscribers and worked with notable philosophers such as: Daniel Dennett, Peter Singer, Susan Blackmore, Galen Strawson, and Patricia Churchland. [8]

Audiobook[edit]

In 2018, The Panpsycast released “Developments in Christian Thought” a free online audiobook in collaboration with Culham St Gabriel’s and Westhill Endowment.[9]

At its peak, the audiobook reached the top 16 of the iTunes Education Chart.[10]
