Indian Airlines Flight 117 was a scheduled domestic flight from Bombay (now Mumbai) to Hyderabad, India. On 12 January 1978, an adult male pedestrian was struck and killed by the Boeing 737-2A8 Adv. (registration VT-EFL) operating the flight as it touched down on the runway at Begumpet Airport.[1]

Aircraft[edit]

The aircraft involved in the accident was a two-month-old Boeing 737-2A8 Advanced registered as VT-EFL and was named Saranga. It was the 504th Boeing 737 built. The aircraft's maiden flight was on 17 November 1977, and it was delivered to Indian Airlines the same month. The aircraft was powered by two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-17A turbofan engines.[2]

The unnamed 50-year-old captain had 21,465 flight hours. Information on the first officer is unknown. Four of the passengers were children.[1]

Accident[edit]

Flight 117 was cleared to land at 6:57 pm local time on runway 09 at Begumpet Airport. When the aircraft touched down, the flight crew saw a man running across the runway. The aircraft struck the man at high speed and he died while being transported to a hospital.[1]

Investigation[edit]

The investigation determined that the man had breached security at Begumpet Airport.[1]

Aftermath[edit]

VT-EFL did not sustain any damage in the accident and it returned to service with Indian Airlines. On 16 August 1991 the same aircraft crashed as Indian Airlines Flight 257 killing all 69 people on board.[3]
