From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Indie Campers is a campervan rental company operating in Europe. Based in Lisbon, Portugal, it was founded in 2013 by Portuguese Hugo Oliveira and Austrian Stefan Koeppl. As of October 2017, the company has a fleet of 450 vehicles spread throughout 70 locations in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy..[1]

History[edit]

Indie Campers was founded in Lisbon in 2013 by Hugo Oliveira from Portugal[2], who came up with the idea after a summer trip to Australia in 2012[3], and Stefan Koeppl from Austria[4], who initially launched the project with the help and oversight of the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs program of the European Union[5].

In 2014, Stefan Koeppl sold his share of the business in order to proceed a career in venture capital[6], leaving Oliveira as the sole owner of the company.

In 2015, Portugal Ventures invested solo in the company’s seed investment round[7]. In 2017, CEO Hugo Oliveira reacquired that share, after having fulfilled the goal of the investment vehicle: leveraging the internationalization and growth of the company.[8]

Between 2015 and 2017, the company grew from 3 to 80 employees, spread throughout its headquarters and its operational locations[9]. In January 2018, the company announced it was hiring 150 new people for roles in Operations, Customer Support, Marketing and Finance.[10]

As of October 2017, the company has a fleet of 450 campervans[11], having grown at a 4x annual rate from 3 in 2014, 24 in 2015 and 100 in 2016[12].

Operations[edit]
