Indie Recordings is a Norwegian independent record label specialising in heavy metal and hard rock. Founded in 2005, the label has become one of Scandinavia's leading independent labels within the genre, representing artists from Norway and abroad.[1][2]
The label was established by brothers Erik and Espen Røhne following the creation of the distribution company Indie Distribution. Having previously founded Tabu Recordings, they sought to build a Norwegian alternative to the British and German labels that dominated the European rock and metal market, while enabling Norwegian artists to pursue international careers without leaving the domestic industry.[3][4]
Rather than functioning solely as a traditional record label, Indie Recordings has emphasised long-term artist development through close A&R collaboration, visual branding and international marketing. Over time the company expanded beyond Norway, signing artists from across Europe and establishing an international distribution network.[4]
History
Indie Recordings grew out of Indie Distribution, a company established in 2005 to distribute releases for independent rock and metal labels. At its height, the distribution business handled releases from approximately 350 labels, including Nuclear Blast, Metal Blade and Roadrunner Records. As the physical music market declined, the company concluded that distribution alone was no longer commercially sustainable and increasingly shifted its focus towards operating its own label.[2]
The label initially signed around ten Norwegian bands, with Erlend Gjerde appointed to oversee its development before later becoming managing director and co-owner.[4] From the outset, Indie Recordings focused on Norwegian rock and metal acts, but gradually expanded its roster with international artists including Cult of Luna, Wolcensmen and Knogjärn.[5]
In 2009 the label entered into a partnership with The End Records to distribute its catalogue in North America, providing wider international exposure for artists.[6][7]
The company's tenth anniversary was celebrated in 2015 with a European tour featuring Vreid, Keep of Kalessin and Vredehammer.[8][9]
During the late 2010s the label increasingly focused on digital distribution, streaming platforms and direct audience engagement, while also expanding into music publishing, songwriter development, songwriting camps and studio production.[1][2]
In 2024, Indie Recordings joined Propeller Recordings and 777 Music in forming the music group Sounds Like Gold. The three companies retained their individual identities while collaborating on international operations, with Erlend Gjerde serving as the group's inaugural managing director. Virgin Music Group was appointed as the group's global distributor.[10][11]
Reception and legacy
According to Music Norway, the Norwegian music industry's official export organisation, Indie Recordings is one of Scandinavia's leading independent labels specialising in hard rock and heavy metal.[1] The music magazine Musikknyheter.no has characterised the company as a leading independent Scandinavian record label.[2]
MusicRadar has highlighted the label’s emphasis on long-term artist development, including its close involvement in songwriting, repertoire, visual identity and career planning. The publication also noted the label’s role in developing and marketing Norwegian heavy-music acts internationally.[4]
Over the course of its history, Indie Recordings has worked with more than 100 artists and bands.[12] Among the acts whose recordings have been released by the label are Enslaved, Kvelertak, Satyricon, Wardruna, Kampfar, Oslo Ess, 1349, Gaahls WYRD, The Good The Bad and The Zugly, Cult of Luna and Vreid.[12]
Releases issued by Indie Recordings had received twelve Spellemannprisen awards and more than twenty nominations by 2026. Albums released through the label have also achieved Norwegian gold certification, including releases by Kvelertak, Oslo Ess and Satyricon.[4]
Reviewing the label's tenth anniversary in 2015, Heavymetal.no described Indie Recordings as "extremely important to the Norwegian metal scene since its inception", highlighting that it had been founded by people with longstanding connections to Norway's metal community.[9]
Indie Recordings was also among the initiators of by:Larm Black, a programme dedicated to rock and metal that was introduced in cooperation with by:Larm following debate over the representation of heavier genres at the festival. The initiative was launched with participation from managing director Erlend Gjerde and has continued as part of the festival's industry programme. The initiative and the label’s involvement were covered by the Norwegian national newspaper Aftenposten.[13][14]
