Activism to decolonize Canadian schools and to counter violence against Indigenous people

Indygo Arscott is a First Nations political activist and aspiring filmmaker. They are fighting for Indigenous rights and working to decolonize Canadian schools.[1]

Early life[edit]

Arscott was born into a First Nations family and attended Beverly Glen Junior Public School and Sir Ernest MacMillan Senior Public School in Scarborough, Ontario, where they were occasionally bullied for their racial background.

Activism[edit]

Rally for Tina Fontaine[edit]

In March 2018, Arscott held a rally outside Toronto City Hall to voice outrage in memory of Tina Fontaine after her alleged murderer was found not guilty of the crime.[2][3] The rally was also held to counter violence against Indigenous people, and occurred weeks after another protest in Nathan Phillips Square that was held due to the not-guilty verdict of a man charged with second-degree murder of Colten Boushie from Red Pheasant First Nation.[4][5]

Rally against Doug Ford[edit]

In July 2018, Arscott spoke at a rally held at Queen's Park that protested against Doug Ford's decision to revert Ontario's sex education curriculum and to cancel writing sessions that would bring more Indigenous content into the curriculum.[6] They fear that this will cause younger people to feel more uninformed and fearful.

Personal life[edit]

Arscott is of Native Canadian Ojibwe background with the Marten Clan and identifies as queer and non-binary.[7][8] They have consistently voiced their disappointment towards the Canadian government and justice system for disregarding Indigenous rights, and early settlers such as John A. Macdonald and Christopher Columbus for colonizing Canada and America.
