Master is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language action drama film written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Produced by Xavier Britto, under his maiden production house XB Film Creators, the film stars Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi while Malavika Mohanan, Arjun Das, Andrea Jeremiah and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj play supporting roles. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while cinematography and editing are performed by Sathyan Sooryan and Philomin Raj respectively.

The original release date of 9 April 2020 was deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. After being delayed, due to the maker's decision on a theatrical release, it was released on 13 January 2021, the eve of Pongal festival. In addition to being released in Tamil, it was also dubbed and released in Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada with the same title, whereas the Hindi version titled Vijay the Master, was released on 14 January 2021.[1] The film received positive reviews praising the characterisation and performances of Vijay and Sethupathi, dialogues, screenplay, music and cinematography, though critics pointed the predictability and length.[2] It was one of the highest grossing Tamil films of all-time.[3] The film was noted and praised by trade analysts, exhibitors and many prominent celebrities from the film fraternity for reviving the theatrical business in India, which was severely impacted due to the pandemic.[4]

Influence on celebrities[edit]

Many prominent industry analysts, cinema trade exhibitors and distributors and members from the film fraternity extended their support to Master, as it was the first-mainstream Indian film to be released post-the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.[5][6] Dhanush tweeted about the theatrical release of Master,[7] in which he asked fans to follow the safety precautions, while watching the film.[8][9][10] During the audio launch of Eeswaran (2021), which released along with Master, its lead actor Silambarasan also requested fans to watch the films in theatres, following the necessary guidelines for safety.[11] Director Mysskin[12] and actress Raadhika, also praised the actor's decision to release the film in theatres,[13] as well as many producers and distributors.[14][15] Post Master's success, many North Indian trade exhibitors suggested Bollywood industry, to release their films post-pandemic.[16][17]

Keerthy Suresh called watching the first show of the film as "ecstatic as it feels to be back at a theatre after waiting for a whole year".[18] Dileep also praised the film and its crew members, as it was being the first film to be screened post-reopening of Kerala theatres.[19] Malayalam actors Vineeth Sreenivasan, Kalyani Priyadarshan and Pranav Mohanlal, who worked in Hridayam, praised the film after watching in a theatre in Chennai.[20] Standup comedian-cum-actor Karthik Kumar too lauded the film and Vijay, for allowing Vijay Sethupathi's performance getting well-received through the film.[21] At the pre-release event of Uppena, which had Vijay Sethupathi playing a negative role in the film, Chiranjeevi praised the actor's performance in Master in that launch event.[22][23] Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin praised the film and also the performances of Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi,[24] he also recommended Ajinkya Rahane to watch the film.[25] Karthick Naren, who watched the film had advised Lokesh to write more characters like J. D. (John Durairaj), played by Vijay in the film.[26] He also wanted a prequel for the film showing the character J. D.'s bonding with professor V. C. Selvam, the character played by Kamal Haasan in Nammavar (1994), as Lokesh heavily inspires Haasan's works in his films.[27][28] During the promotions of RRR in Chennai, one of the lead actors, N. T. Rama Rao Jr. opined about the impact Master, where the film (dubbed Telugu version) was a success in Andhra and Telangana regions.[29][30]

"Vaathi Coming" became a social phenomenon upon release. At the second test match between India and England held in Chennai, Ashwin grooved to the song when it is played during the test match.[31] The video went viral across the release and Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya, did the shoulder drop step in a cover video posted on 19 February 2021.[32][33] The song "Vaathi Coming" reached phenomenal response and many Indian celebrities such as Shilpa Shetty,[34] Nazriya Nazim,[35] Varalaxmi Sarathkumar[36] and Genelia D'Souza[37] recreated the signature step which went viral through social media. Cricketer Harbhajan Singh did the step during the shooting of Friendship, his acting debut,[38] as was David Warner. He did twice,[39] during the practice session of the Indian Premier League match with teammates along with Rashid Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.[40] Warner recreated the step again on 2 August 2021, which he posted in his Instagram handle.[41][42] Suresh Raina grooved to the song at the Behindwoods Gold Medals awards held on 7 March 2021, where he was awarded The Global Icon of Inspiration: Sports, by the film's director Lokesh Kanagaraj.[43] Choreographer Ganesh Acharya, performed his version of the song "Kutti Story" and won positive reviews.[44]

Impact[edit]

Though the release was pushed to January 2021, Master was listed in the Most Anticipated Tamil Films of 2020, in the articles listed by Firstpost,[45] Bloomberg Quint[46] and The Indian Express.[47] The film topped the list of most tweeted hashtags about movies, in a survey report by Twitter India.[48][49] The #MasterSelfie where Vijay took a selfie along with his fans in a shooting spot from Neyveli,[50] became the most retweeted tweet in India of 2020.[51][52] The following year, also coinciding with its release,[53] Twitter released a year-end survey report with Master becoming the most tweeted Indian film of 2021 (the only film in the list),[54] and also topped the position in the most tweeted Indian films in 'Top 5' followed by Tamil films Valimai, Jai Bhim and the upcoming Vijay-starrer Beast.[55][56]

Prior to the release, the film notched 80% higher ticket sales in BookMyShow, beating Vijay's previous film Bigil (2019),[57] and became the only Tamil film to top the list published by BookMyShow, being listed at the second position; the first being Sooryavanshi (2021).[58] Many sources reported that Master was noted for the revival of theatrical business, irrespective of the box-office collections;[59][60] while, being one among the South Indian films, that gained attention across the country and dominated the Hindi film industry.[61][62] Post-release, the film topped IMDb's list of "most popular Indian films and web series" during June 2021;[63] however IMDb later released a list of "Top 10 Indian Movies of 2021", in which Master was listed the 4th position.[64][65] The film was listed in the 6th position in the "most searched film" on Google;[66][67] it was the second Tamil film to feature in this list, followed by Suriya-starrer Jai Bhim, which topped the first position.[68] The Indian Express, Hindustan Times and The News Minute named Master as one of the "Best Tamil Films" released in 2021.[69][70] Bjorn Surrao, who lend vocals for the track "Master the Blaster" was acknowledged as the "breakout star of Tamil Cinema in 2021", according to an article published by Cinema Express,[71][lower-alpha 1] while Malavika Mohanan, the film's lead actress was listed in the third position of "IMDb's Breakout Stars of 2021".[72]

An article based on the film's theatrical release and anticipation surrounded towards the film was published by ESPNcricinfo, the online news portal of ESPN, for cricket-related sources, before the first test match between India and England was held in Chennai on 5–9 February 2021, without spectators.[73] Sowmya Rajendran of The News Minute, published an article regarding the deleted scene of the film saying about how Tamil heroes move away from victim blaming, and praised Vijay for the changes he made in the film graph about portrayal of women in Tamil cinema; she referenced the deleted scene to the film Sivakasi (2005), where Vijay questioned Asin for her dressing sense in a way that normalises sexual harassment and said that "men would worship her if she were to dress in a saree".[74]

Master along with Sivakarthikeyan's Doctor and Silambarasan's Maanaadu, were noted by cinephiles for the off-beat portrayal, with a stronger and intelligent antagonist and a vulnerable hero, not being featured in mainstream Tamil films. The Hindu-based critic Praveen Sudevan opined: "In the film, Vijay plays John Durairaj (aka JD), a depressed, insomniac, and alcoholic professor. His drinking problem leads to the death of two children. Usually, in Vijay films, his characters are always ahead of the antagonists. But in Master, JD has to conquer his weaknesses before facing the villain [...] In contrast, Vijay Sethupathi’s character, Bhavani, is a god-fearing teetotaller blessed with a superhero-like punch that can kill his opponent. He is, in fact, more powerful than Vijay. The film gives as much space and scope for Vijay Sethupathi as it does for Vijay."[75] Critic Aditya Shrikrishna of Film Companion South, also commented about the pre-interval sequence, which was "one of the best scenes that Lokesh had crafted".[76]

In popular culture[edit]

The dialogue "Ostrich Theriyuma" became popular upon its release. It featured when Vijay Sethupathi talks to one of his accomplices, where he explains about how "an ostrich hatches an egg, which is bigger in size, but the pain will be felt only by that ostrich". Since then, the topics "ostrich" and "ostrich egg" became the most searched terms in Google, after the film's release,[77] and was widely used in internet memes.[78] It also revealed that the "Ostrich philosophy" had a connection with Sethupathi's 2017 film Vikram Vedha, and was originally credited to K. Manikandan, the film's co-writer.[79]

The outfits worn by Vijay in the film became popular,[80][81] and the costume designer Pallavi Singh lauded for her work in the film.[82] Eventually, the outfits were sold by a textile store in Chennai.[83] Arun Titan, an entrepreneur and founder of the Chennai-based startup company named Silaii revealed that "the sculptures based on Vijay's character in the film was used only for promotional purposes (the company joined as the official partner for merchandising). But very soon, it sold like hot cakes and people are interested in buying the sculptures which were displayed in cinema halls and mall complexes".[84] He said that in addition to the sales, Titan revealed the statues were available in e-commerce stores.[85] The vintage model of Hindustan Contessa car used by Vijay, too gained popularity and was later auctioned.[86][87]

During an interaction with fans through Twitter Spaces on the eve of Vijay's birthday (21 June 2021), Lokesh Kanagaraj revealed that the bracelet that Vijay wore in the film is not lost, as thought by the actor, but is safe with him as a memory of the film. Lokesh said that he requested Vijay to return the bracelet after he wraps the film's shoot, but Vijay refused to do so. On the final day of the shoot (29 February 2020), he eventually tricked Vijay to give him the bracelet saying he wanted to check the fit, and had not returned to the actor.[88]
