Inquivesta is the annual science, social and cultural festival of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata (IISER Kolkata).[2] The festival usually takes place in February or March over the course of three days and is organized entirely by a committee of undergraduate students of IISER Kolkata.

Attracting its audience primarily from the purlieus of Kolkata, Inquivesta encompasses a variety of events which include competitions, workshops, exhibitions, guest lectures and social outreach programmes.[3] The festival seeks to provide collegiate and scholastic students a platform to develop and showcase their scientific, technical and creative prowess. The eighth edition of the festival, titled Inquivesta 8 is scheduled to be held during 2-4 February, 2018.[4] An intra-institute offshoot of the festival, titled Inquibytes, took place during 10-11 November, 2017.

Inception[edit]

IISER Kolkata, a leading science education and research institute in India, was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2006 and was deemed an Institute of National Importance[5] in 2012. The idea of developing a college festival for IISER Kolkata was put forward in the year 2011 by a group of then-third-year undergraduate students. In the forefront were Harshit Lakhotia, Ankan Bag, Anindya Sengupta and Hemant Sharma, who also served as the inaugural fest coordinator of Inquivesta. The Institute put forward seed money of ₹100,000 towards the initiation of the fest. The rest of the budget was realized through student collections.

Until 2014, the transit campus of IISER Kolkata (within the campus of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya) served as the venue for Inquivesta. Following the relocation of the institute to its current and permanent campus near Kalyani in the same year, Inquivesta is perennially held in the new campus.

Events[edit]

Workshops[edit]

Inquivesta is known to host workshops in collaboration with, and conducted by, Information Technology companies during the course of its run. A team of Facebook developers shall be conducting a workshop titled Hackathon in the upcoming edition of the fest. A workshop on virtual reality, which shall be conducted by Mozilla, is also to be hosted. The previous edition of Inquivesta organized a digital photography workshop, in collaboration with Canon.

Exhibitions and Galleries[edit]

Exhibitions related to art/photography and science are perennially pertinent with Inquivesta and are open for display to the general public. Inquivesta 8 has introduced an exhibition-based competition titled Paradigm, which calls for participation among scholastic students across different age categories. Paradigm seeks participants to present their unique scientific ideas pertaining to real-life challenges. Artistic and other concomitant works of participants in various competitions conducted during the fest are also exhibited.

Inquivesta also organizes CubeHub Open, in association with the World Cubing Association (WCA), in which participants showcase their speedcubing skills. A popular variant of chess, the Antichess, is also presented as one of the events under this category.

Crime Scene Investigation (inspired from the television show of the same name), often stylized as C.S.I., is a team-based event which requires participant-teams to model as investigators and unravel a simulated crime scenario. The fest also puts on another team-based event named Land of Secret Treasures, stylized as L.O.S.T. - an adventure game which seeks to test participants’ exploration skills.

Online[edit]

Inquivesta hosts two online events prior to the commencement of the festival. Photon is a digital photography competition based on creative thinking. Cryptek is a cryptanalysis and steganography event.

Science and technology[edit]

A participant of Thrust launching a water rocket

Inspired by the game show Scrapheap Challenge, Junkyard Wars (named after the American spin-off of Scrapheap Challenge) is an event where teams of contestants build inventive models using materials available in a scrapheap. The event of BAHWhack! (loosely based on the international festival titled BAHFest, “BAH” abbreviating bad ad hoc), is a platform for speakers to present well-reasoned and thoroughly-researched, but completely absurd ad hoc hypotheses for commonly-observed phenomena.

Inquivesta also organizes Thrust, where teams compete to build and launch a pressurized water rocket with maximum efficiency. Another tech event is Botprix, in which participants construct a manually controlled wireless/wired robot capable of maneuvering through various terrains.

The fest also holds an event called Biomimetics, based on the biotechnology field of the same name.

Cultural[edit]

Starting from the eight edition of Inquivesta, and onward every year, an open-for-all band competition across all genre of music shall be conducted by the fest. This Battle of the Bands event is titled Ramble On, inspired by the Led Zeppelin song of the same name.

Art Beat is the art competition of Inquivesta. It is a conglomerate of four separate events based on different art techniques, viz. mimimalism, spray painting and so on.

Quiz and public-speaking[edit]

Based on the BBC Radio 4 radio comedy and television panel game Just a Minute (often shortened to JAM), Inquivesta organizes a similar event stylishly named as JAMx. Also part of the fest is a team-based quizzing event titled GNQ. A debating contest following the Oxford Presidential style, titled Rationale, is also held.

Each event is organized by a team of 2-3 members. Event organizers are traditionally second year students; however, the organizational needs of certain events are exclusively reserved for freshman year students.

The organizing body of Inquivesta shall supervise and be aided by the freshman year students.
