Insight Films is a British film and television production company, founded by Producer Director Debbie Shuter and Director Adam Tysoein 1995 following the success of Debbie's first film, 'Beigels Already'; which followed a 24 hour period in the life of the now famous Brick Lane Beigel Bake in east London. 'Beigels Already'won the audience award at the Oberhausen film festival and became one of the most successful films in the BBC's '10x10' short film series Debbie and Adam then pitched a documentary project to Paul Watson, commissioning editor at the BBC's flagship documentary strand '40 minutes'. 'The Final Puff' would follow the journey of Debbie's father, Arnie Shuter, from his home in Wales to anti-smoking guru, Allen Carrin a bid to kick his 40 year smoking habit. However, after a difficult development period the film was picked up by Producer Caroline Hewitt for her new production company Strawberry Vale productions. After completion 'The Final Puff' was seen by Peter Moore, [1]then head of documentaries at Channel 4, and broadcast on its 'Short stories' strand, gaining a massive audience reaction and leading to a working relationship that would last until Peter left Channel 4 in 1999. During this period Debbie and Adam worked with a number of separate production companies individually and as a team while they developed projects for Peter Moore under the Insight Films banner.
Debbie and Adam's final Insight Films project for Channel 4 would be 'St Lukes', a wry look at the advertising company that was responsible for the then Labour governments employment advertising. Shown as part of the Cutting Edge strand, St Lukes would mark the first foray into television for advertising executive David Abraham, who would eventually become Chief Executive of Channel 4[2].
The BBC and independent production[edit]
Insight films would go on to work with BBC1 on the controversial documentary 'Head on the Block'which followed a year in the life of headteacher, Jo Shuter, Debbie's sister. 'Head on the Block' would become mired in controversy[3], and was eventually shown as part of BBC1's 40 minute 'One Life' strand as 'Educating Haji'During this period Debbie and Adam, in association with Insight Films, began developing feature length projects through an SPV company, AND films, culminating in the documentary feature, 'Streetdance family"[4], co-directed by Debbie and Adam, and the low budget drama, Dirtymoney'[5] produced by Debbie and written and directed by Adam. Insight Films is currently developing a number of feature length documentary and drama projects including, 'Capture' written by Rachel Hirons.[6]
