Insinia is a British cyber security company noted for hacking and hijacking celebrity Twitter accounts in 2018[1] and exposing the breach of O2 customers private information on the Dark Web.[2]

Company history[edit]

In 2016 the startup company had been central to revealing how O2 customers private information was available to buy on the Dark Web[2] and in 2017 Insinia Security Limited was formally founded by Mike Godfrey.[3] Now the company operates from Oxfordshire and is hired by organisations to test their cyber security systems and deliver reports on the strengths and weaknesses. According to Linkedin the company offers Cyber Security, Operations Security and Web Application Security services.[4]

2018 Twitter hack[edit]

British television celebrities Eamonn Holmes and Louis Theroux were targeted by Insinia to highlight a longstanding security flaw in Twitter's system.[1] While Insinia was accused of breaking the law and breaching the Computer Misuse Act, chief executive of the company, and "ethical hacker"[5] Mike Godfrey told the BBC "Nothing has been maliciously hacked," claiming Insinia only had "passive interaction" with the Twitter accounts and never broke the law.[6] In a blog post on Medium Insinia detailed how they managed to takeover the Twitter accounts and how the loophole, if not fixed, could be used to spread fake news or deliberately damage a reputation of notable figures.[7] This incident forced Twitter to update their systems with a spokesperson claiming, “We’ve resolved a bug that allowed certain accounts with a connected UK phone number to be targeted by SMS spoofing. We’ll continue to investigate any related reports to ensure our account security protocols are functioning as expected.”[8]

Media[edit]

INSINIA and founder Mike Godfrey have appeared on or contributed to a number of notable British media outlets including television channels, the BBC,[9] Channel 4,[10] Channel 5,[11] radio stations LBC,[12] TalkRadio,[13] and national newspapers The Daily Telegraph[14] and The Daily Mirror.[15]
